Can we build a better roach trap? Researchers in the NMSU Hubbard Urban Entomology Lab are testing new bait strategies for invasive Turkestan cockroaches in and around livestock facilities and the surrounding neighborhoods. Theyโ€™ve successfully developed a biodegradable hydrogel bait that can withstand New Mexican heat and is safe to deploy around humans and animals. Their next step is deploying these baits near livestock facilities and infrastructure to replace general purpose insecticide spraying.

The 4-H Dinner & Dance 2026 was a blast! Everyone got to enjoy playing some mini golf for prizes. Even Associate Dean Torres got in on the action. Students got to meet the new Madagascar Hissing roaches that made their first appearance back at the FFA Career Expo. And one of our PhD students, Ram, was interviewed and got to talk about our program in EPPWS. Until next time! ๐Ÿ˜Š
