Last week at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes, attendees joined Chef Fátima Juárez of Komal for a hands-on experience exploring the cultural significance of native Mexican corn.

Together, we learned about the nixtamalization process, discovered the diversity of corn varieties, and prepared handmade tortillas on the comal.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for an afternoon filled with learning, tradition, and community!

Looking for plans this week?

Join us at LA Plaza for a weekend filled with music, culture, community, and celebration.

On Friday, dance the night away at our Summer of Salsa concert featuring Roosevelt “El Presidente de la Salsa” and Super DJ Robby. Arrive early for a free salsa lesson with Roberto, and browse vinyl records from Latin Gold Records.

On Saturday, take a free guided tour of our exhibitions with one of our Navegantes and discover how activists organized their communities to challenge discrimination and create change throughout Los Angeles history.

Later that day, we're excited to welcome acclaimed authors Reyna Grande and Julissa Arce for a special plática. While the event is sold out, walk-ins will be admitted as space allows.

And don't miss Jotería, one of our favorite events of the year, as we celebrate Pride Month. 🏳️‍🌈

On Sunday, LA Plaza's galleries will be open exclusively to attendees of the Chicano Music Festival. For festival details, please visit their social media channels.

🕛 Museum Hours: Wednesday–Sunday, 12–5 pm

Roll up sleeves, grab a hat, and let’s get to work in the Milpa! 🌱🌽🫘

The milpa teaches us that all good things in life require proper maintenance. The seeds we planted in the Spring are well on their way and growing exponentially every day.

In this class, we'll learn how to properly maintain all types of plants within our garden. Some topics we will cover include utilizing vertical space, pruning, integrative pest management, water-wise irrigation, fertilization, proper weeding, and the benefits of mulching.

Special guest, Marlene Aguilar of Irekuarhikua.

Together, these two influential voices will discuss the complexities of the immigrant experience, moving beyond the immigrant success story to discuss the deeper realities of motherhood, a writing career, and the internal work of healing from the scars left by migration.
