Every time I go to Mexico City I think I know what to expect. And every single time it surprises me.

The connections happen fast and they go deep. Someone seeks you out at a fair. A friend says come with me on Sunday. You end up in a space that takes your breath away having a conversation you can't quite translate but somehow understand completely. That's just how it works there.

On Sundays in Mexico City, people drive two to four hours to come dance Danzón in the parks. They get fully dressed up and dance from 9am to 4pm with a live band.

Danzón originated in Cuba, born from the movement of enslaved people whose ankles were shackled. Only four steps at a time. So everything became the upper body.

I went with artist Laura Hernández, whose studio is right near Zócalo. She introduced me to it after we came across a photography exhibition documenting the tradition. It was a really beautiful afternoon.

I came across Adrien's work at Salon Acme and haven't stopped thinking about it since. He builds his paintings in up to 20 layers of graphite, sanding back between each one. The result looks like smoke frozen in place.

Omar is someone I've been collaborating with for years. He sources thousands of images from classical paintings, layers them, cuts them, rebuilds them into shaped compositions that feel almost architectural. Just completed a 100-foot mosaic commission for the US Embassy in Mexico City.

Kara Rooney’s hand-woven wool textile works focus on the process of weaving and building surfaces through repeated handwork.

Each piece is made through layers of thread and pattern, where the structure slowly takes shape over time. The material holds texture and weight, with the making still visible in the final work.

There is a clear focus on process, where time and repetition are part of what you see in the finished piece.

Jay Tamang’s Majestic Harvest, Bay Bridge Beneath the Giant Moon, presents a nocturnal landscape centered on the Bay Bridge under an enlarged lunar form.

The work shifts between realism and atmospheric distortion, where scale and light reshape the familiar architecture of the scene into something more suspended and interpretive.

Two experiences from Mexico City that both stuck with me.

Palomo Residency is founded by artist Enrique Arrigote, where six residents are currently living and working together inside one building. Visiting during Zona Maco felt less like a studio tour and more like walking into someone's process mid-thought.Then there was Valentina Díaz, whose installation is a language game played across a giant tongue, part hopscotch, part ping pong.

Her English is limited and my Spanish is limited, so we used a translation app called Owly that speaks back in your own voice. We were in tears laughing. Felt very on theme for an artist whose whole practice is about language.

I came across JO-HS Gallery during Zona Maco, and honestly, the way it happened says a lot about the space. The gallerist, Natalia, sought me out personally and invited me to come see their exhibition. She is absolutely lovely, the kind of person who makes you immediately want to pay attention to what she's building.

It's a young gallery, but there's a real sense of intention behind it. They have a space in New York as well. The show during Zona Maco was a pop-up group exhibition, and I've been going back through the work ever since, thinking about how each artist contributes to the larger conversation of the show.
