There’s something special about watching the work that happens before the art is even created.

Behind the scenes at The Dabble Shack, a new outdoor space is being built to run their Raku kilns. And this crew doesn’t sit back and wait for things to happen.

From spreading stone to jumping on a backhoe and getting it done, this is what passion, creativity, and dedication actually look like.

There’s really nothing the Dabble Shack crew can’t do.

These are the moments that lay the foundation for everything you’ll see come out of this space next. Built with hard work, heart, and a whole lot of grit.

Stay tuned. This is just the beginning.

There’s something special about seeing pottery in the middle of the process.

Dale fired up the kiln and has been working on several new pieces. From freshly thrown forms to textured surfaces before glazing, these photos show a glimpse of the craft before the final transformation.

Every piece starts like this. Clay, patience, and a lot of experience on the wheel.

We also have a few show announcements coming soon, so keep an eye on the page. There will be opportunities to see Dale’s work in person this season.

More to come soon.

✨ Something New at The Dabble Shack ✨

Friday evening we experimented with a new Raku firing process and we are in love with the results.

This technique is called Stannous Chloride fuming.

Here’s how it works.

We start with a piece that has a shiny glaze, in this case black.
When it comes out of the kiln at 1888°, we spray ferric chloride on the surface, which creates a bright silver highlight.

After cooling, the piece goes back into the kiln and is brought to about 1000°.
The kiln is opened and small piles of stannous chloride are placed around the work. As it melts, it releases fumes that react with the glaze, creating those deep metallic, oil slick colors and shifting iridescence you see here.

It’s a little wild.
It’s a little unpredictable.
And yes, it’s a bit toxic, so we do this process outside.

But the results speak for themselves.

We’re continuing to experiment with this technique and are hoping to offer workshops in the summer for those who want to try it themselves.

Until then, enjoy the glow.
And feel free to guess which piece belongs to which of us 😉

When you “dabble” in something you love… magic happens.
Dale decided to spend some time back in the wood shop, and this is what came out of it. It’s been a minute since he’s focused on woodworking, but clearly it still flows right through him. Handmade, unique, and full of character; just how we like it.

✨ Fresh from the kiln at Dabble Shack ✨

We’re absolutely in love with these sweet ceramic creations made by Dale & Dannielle. 🖤🐧

Each piece is full of character, texture, and heart; from the tender penguin families to the playful details and beautiful glazing. These little works of art feel both whimsical and grounding, the kind of pieces that quietly bring joy wherever they’re displayed.

These are truly one-of-a-kind pieces, each with its own personality and charm. 💛
Which one is calling to you?

✨ Remember that pottery trip we told you about? ✨
Well… life (and clay) happened; and we’ve been a little quiet since then.
No hibernation here 😄 just a whole lot of creating, experimenting, learning, and laughing along the way.

That North Carolina workshop sparked so much inspiration; new firing techniques, fresh ideas, and plenty of moments that reminded us why we love this community so much.
Including these guys proudly showing off their hard-earned potter bellies 😂 (clay life is real, folks).

Dannielle and the crew soaked up every second, Dale kept things entertaining as always, and we came home with minds buzzing and hands itching to create. And yes; new kiln loads are coming soon, and we can’t wait to share what’s been happening behind the scenes 👀✨

Thank you for sticking with us while we do what we do best: learn, play, and bring that energy back into every piece we make.
More to come very soon 🤍
