Historic Mableton Documenting and celebrating historical places in Mableton, Georgia

Turns out, when you rebuild your front porch, you’re supposed to get a permit first.

Oops. 😅

I didn’t know I needed city approval when I started repairs on the front porch of my circa 1951 home. It’s because a front stoop and steps are part of the building and there is a protocol to follow that most common folks and handyman types don’t know. So, I was mortified when a City of Mableton code enforcement officer happened to spot the work and issued a stop-work order.

The City of Mableton Permiting & Zoning office staff are very nice, but after trying to navigate permitting, zoning, inspections, and all the red tape on my own, I quickly realized I needed professional and experienced help. Enter General Contractor, Andrew Henderson.

One thing about historic homes: they always have surprises. Andrew immediately knew the old concrete stoop likely had a rotted board hidden behind it—a common issue in older homes. Sure enough, he was right, and his crew made the repairs needed to protect my 1951 home.

The good news? We got approval from the city building inspector and are back on track.

Historic home ownership is never boring. Follow along for Part 2! 🏡✨

One thing I’ve learned about publicly doing volunteer work is that it can sometimes make you a target for criticism.

When people see someone trying to improve their community, it can force them to reflect on what they are (or aren’t) doing themselves.

I moved to Mableton less than three years ago because I was drawn to the area, and I quickly fell in love with the city and the generous, friendly community here.

💚I was inspired by a group of local volunteers to get involved with litter cleanups in my historic neighborhood, and I’ve been proud to contribute in my own small way ever since.

🏡Many neighbors have thanked me and supported the effort. But surprisingly, others have been upset that I’m cleaning things up or supporting beautification efforts in our city.

👍My goal is not to upset anyone or change anyone’s way of life. I simply want to be a good neighbor. I want to create community for people who want it. I want to help preserve our beautiful historic homes for future generations. And I believe our neighbors deserve to live in a clean, safe, and beautiful environment.

So imagine hating someone for picking up trash.

I’ll keep showing up anyway. 😎
