For our blog this week, we interviewed Chelsie Kliese, owner and maker behind Handmade Concrete Decor | House of Ivy, which creates distinctive concrete decor for both the home and office.

Check out carnelianart.com or our space at 221 King St. in Suite 102 to see our inventory of original and handmade works from House of Ivy, and to read the Q&A we did with Kliese.

GALLERY NIGHT ANNOUNCEMENT

Carnelian Art Gallery, located at 221 King St., Suite 102, in downtown Madison, is pleased to announce its November exhibition, titled ”An Empty Desk” This is a duo exhibition – with works curated by Madison artists R-Lo and Rachael Hunter – that aims to explore themes around agency, education, morality, ethics and education.

“In the back of class,
time lives on. Counting
every stain on the ceiling
as the teacher yawns.

Squeezing shut
anything that hears,
an empty desk asks
if it could hold your tears.”

An Empty Desk is slated to kick off with an opening reception at 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6, for Gallery Night, organized by the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA Madison Museum of Contemporary Art). The show’s end date is on Sunday, Nov. 29. As always at Carnelian Art Gallery, admission on opening night is free, and light refreshments will be served.

At 6 p.m. on opening night, R-Lo and Hunter will give a brief talk regarding how the exhibition came together. The exhibition also features an interactive installation, whose details won’t be revealed until Gallery Night.

Gallery Night “offers art lovers and art novices alike an opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of exhibitions, opening receptions, special events and demonstrations at venues throughout the city. During Gallery Night, dozens of venues open their doors to invite the public in to see and shop for original artwork,” according to MMoCA.

Chuck Bauer: Recent Works is slated to kick off with an opening reception at 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2. The show’s end date is Saturday, Oct. 31. Some functional art pieces by Wisconsin artist Wendy La Schum have made their way to Carnelian Art Gallery and are now available for purchase at our physical space and on our website and carnelianart.com!

La Schum works with all types of wood to make functional bowls and other whimsical kitchen wares. Check her out through her business, Forest and Forge LLC. A fun tradition of La Schum’s is to put the latitude and longitude of the tree she used to make one of her artworks on its bottom.

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

Carnelian Art Gallery plans to host a glass works show in November 2027 with the deadline to submit works being the end of March 2027. The show’s theme will be determined once we have enough submissions.

We will only accept submissions from artists in the Midwest. We seek fine art glass artwork and glass mosaics. Works can be functional in nature, hang on the wall, or be sculpted.

To submit works, please send us an email or go to carnelianart.com/submit and follow the prompts on the webpage. Please signify on the Google form that you are applying for the glass exhibition.
