84 Years Since Pearl Harbor.
The Date That Awakened a Giant
Today, we commemorate the 84th anniversary of the Attack on Pearl Harbor, an event that not only changed the course of World War II but redefined the role of American nations in the global conflict.
🌅 The Surprise Attack.
On the morning of Sunday, December 7, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy launched a surprise aerial attack against the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The main objective was to neutralize the United States Pacific Fleet, giving Japan a free hand for its expansionist ambitions in Southeast Asia.
In just 90 minutes, the offensive caused massive damage:
- Numerous warships, including several battleships, were sunk or severely damaged.
- Hundreds of aircraft were destroyed.
- More than 2,400 Americans lost their lives, including military personnel and civilians.
📜 The Preamble. Escalating Tensions.
The attack did not come out of nowhere. It was the culmination of years of growing tensions between Japan and the United States, driven by:
- Japanese Expansionism: Japanese aggression in China and the occupation of French Indochina generated deep concern in Washington.
- Economic Sanctions: In response to military expansion, the United States and other countries imposed severe trade embargoes on Japan, especially the crucial oil embargo. This forced the Japanese Empire to choose between withdrawing from conquered territories or securing resources by force.
- The Element of Surprise: Japan planned the attack as a preemptive measure, seeking a decisive blow before a formal declaration of war could be delivered. The declaration of war message itself was delayed and only reached Washington after the bombs had already dropped.
📢 The Declaration of War and the American Response.
The following day, December 8, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt addressed Congress, describing December 7th as "a date which will live in infamy."
- 🇺🇸 The United States formally declared war on Japan.
- Shortly thereafter, Japan's allies, Germany and Italy, declared war on the United States, sealing the country's full entry into World War II.
This event was the precursor to the involvement of countries across the Americas in the war, as many followed the United States' lead by declaring war on the Axis in the weeks and months that followed. In fact, nations such as Panama and Costa Rica declared war on Japan on the very same day, December 8, 1941, quickly followed by Cuba, Nicaragua, and Guatemala, who joined the Allied cause days later. The unity of the continent was demonstrated in support of the Allies, marking the beginning of their crucial contribution to the final victory.
The attack on Pearl Harbor is a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made and the determination that forged the triumph of freedom.
Honor and Glory to all the brave souls who lost their lives and to the survivors of this infamous attack.
Honor and Glory to all the valiant men and women who, in the years that followed, fought, gave their lives, and to those who survived the greatest armed conflict humanity has ever known.
