As we mark 50 years of tourism in Monroe-West Monroe, this moment offers more than a milestone - it offers a chance to recognize the people who have shaped the experience along the way.

This story stays with you. Robert Louis Brandon Edwards, a Cleveland-based historian, artist, and Ph.D. student in preservation at Columbia University, is restoring a 1947 Greyhound bus as a way to tell the story of the Great Migration. Edwards plans to turn the bus into a mobile museum called the National Museum of the Great Migration.

For millions of Black Americans, buses like this weren’t just transportation. They were a pathway to possibility, carrying people in search of safety, opportunity, and the American dream.

What I appreciate about this work is how it expands our understanding of preservation. It’s not always about buildings. Sometimes it’s about the spaces in between the journeys, the movement, the lived experiences that shaped our history.

Preserving Black history means telling the full story. Thank you Robert Louis Brandon Edwards. I can't wait to see your work in person.

Last Friday, I made a special effort to get to Timez Kitchen and Kocktail before the clock struck 3:00pm for the catch of the day, but it was sold out.

As Black History Month comes to a close, we pay tribute to the legacy of George B. Hamlet, a trailblazer in every sense of the word. Refer to Outsider in Ouachita Parish Politics published in 64 Parishes.

For those of you who are skeptical about Hamlet’s racial identity, he was profiled for posterity sake in The Ouachita Telegraph by editor, George W. McCranie, who described him as, “a very light-colored man of color and a very successful Radical Politician.”

And if you are not fully convinced that Hamlet was the official mayor of the City of Monroe, we leave you with this documentation.
