• sibyl is beyond excited to announce that we’ll be showing beautiful new textile work by the incredible and talented Sarah Nsikak at EXPO Chicago next month •

Nsikak learned to sew from her Nigerian grandmother, a highly esteemed seamstress who followed her family to Oklahoma from the Nigerian state of Oyo. The act of sewing and mending allowed the artist and her grandmother to connect and transcend a difficult language barrier. Nsikak took this precious ancestral knowledge and employed it in adaptation, making and remaking her own clothes in a way that would impact her fine art practice going forward to this day. She moved to New York to work in fashion, but was struck by the material waste and culture of exploitation. She started her own line, La Réunion, named for a small island off the coast of Madagascar. After achieving a remarkable level of success in the garment industry with a dress featured in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s In America: A Lexicon of Fashion exhibition, La Réunion has since shifted to bespoke, sustainable home goods–blankets, throw pillows, lampshades–maintaining Nsikak’s longstanding commitment to the dynamic spirit of materials. Her practice crystallizes at the confluence of art, fashion, and functional design, forsaking any predetermined hierarchy between the three.

and i’m hungry like the wolf • 🐺

In such a moment of uncertainty, the artists point to sources of stability and hope • For Gouldstone, the big questions of mathematics and the rigours of philosophy provide a lode star upon which a direction can be charted • For Surman, the accumulation of art history and popular culture offers a connection to collective human experience, an anchor with which to ride out the storms of the tumultuous present •

this weekend ((november 8 & 9)) is your last chance to visit ROOMMATES before it comes down and the gallery takes a break to focus on some special projects ((more details on that soon 😉)) • make it a priority to swing by saturday or sunday between 12 and 6pm • we love this show, we love these artists, we think you will too ! •

• it takes two ! • 🕺❤️‍🔥🕺 •

emily farranto’s eloquent musings on the subtle art of the two-artist exhibition for this month’s ART BRINE column in antigravity is out now ! • grab a copy wherever you get your caffeine fix around nola • or peruse the pdf online •

“One might expect that Ian Gouldstone’s abstract multi-media works and quiet geometric serigraphs would feel at odds with—or at least disconnected from—Surman’s paintings. But the outcome of pairing these artists (‘ROOMMATES’) is more layered than the messy vs. neat dichotomy of TV cohabitators like The Odd Couple or Will & Grace. I would think painting would be the more fun and carefree roommate at Sibyl; but there is something heavy about the paintings and something more playful about the digital work.” •

ROOMMATES is open for another full week • stop by or schedule an appointment •
