In December 1988, residents of the quiet Scottish town of Lockerbie settled into another winter evening while families watched television and prepared for Christmas. High above them, Pan Am Flight 103 crossed the night sky on its journey from London to New York.
Then, a massive explosion shattered the darkness.
A bomb hidden aboard the aircraft detonated at cruising altitude, breaking the Boeing 747 apart and sending wreckage raining across the town below within seconds.
Witnesses later described hearing a thunderous roar before homes exploded into flames and debris fell across fields, streets, and neighborhoods. Emergency crews rushed through freezing winter conditions while firefighters battled blazes scattered across miles of countryside and residential areas.
The Lockerbie disaster became one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in British history and remains one of the most significant aviation investigations ever conducted.
