Back in 1998, the AEACP brought the idea of teaching elephants how to paint to SE Asia as an alternative to illegal logging and to being used in the burgeoning tourist trade. The concept behind the AEACP is and always was 'using art to benefit the elephants'. This was accomplished by raising funds through the sale of artwork created by the elephants themselves as a way to help support the elephants and their caretakers.

In the 20+ years since our inception, elephant painting has largely been co-opted by the tourism industry in many SE Asian countries. Nevertheless, the elephants find themselves again in a similar situation - out of work but with no wild to return to (see BBC article below).

While we understand times are tough for everyone across the globe, should you be interested in donating or purchasing a painting to help support these elephants in need, please visit us at www.elephantart.org.

Thank you for your support.

As visitors stay away because of coronavirus, many elephant keepers can no longer feed the animals.

Once a purely conservation issue, it is now also considered a threat to biosecurity, public health and the economy.
