Visit us in NYC next month!!!

In the spirit of the 18th-century salon, wherein guests gathered in a private residence at the invitation of a hostess for intimate discussions of arts and culture, Artistoric is pleased to present its SALON popup in New York City. Housed in a prewar brownstone in upper Manhattan, this exhibition places Artistoric’s collection within an immersive domestic environment to inspire conversations around new ways of collecting and learning about these historic objects.

The Memphis Group, founded in Milan in the 1980s, reacted against the stark minimalism and rather formulaic design principles of the Mid-Century Modern style with maximalistic yet lighthearted designs. Memphis designers valued form over function in direct opposition to their predecessors. This is particularly tangible in Memphis ceramics, a medium which historically had been extremely function-dependent.

We are excited to present our collection of Memphis ceramics, designed by Matteo Thun in 1982. These pieces are part of Thun's 'Great Lakes' series, each piece being named after famous historical bodies of water.

Thun’s ceramics prescribe to Memphis's lighthearted approach to design. The large scale and exaggerated form of each vessel conveys an object (an indeed a designer) which does not take itself too seriously. Objects are sculptural first, useful second.

The design on this late 18th-century Wedgwood black basalt amphora was taken directly from an Ancient Attic red-figure ware vessel.

British designers utilized print material to source ideas and designs for their Neoclassical wares. One important reference was Sir William Hamilton's 1766 catalog of 'Etruscan' vases. More often than not, exact designs were lifted from these pages and applied to more contemporary shapes like vases, dishes, and candlesticks. The decorations’ interchangeability enabled factories, Wedgwood in particular, to quickly produce items that were unique and of high-quality at little expense and effort.

Swipe to view the source image in Hamilton's catalog. The Wedgwood vase shows a precise copy with one important change: a cloth has been carefully draped across the figure's lap to hide the nudity. While nudity, both male and female, was prevalent on the Ancient vases, Wedgwood and his contemporaries never included it in their designs as it would have been too scandalous for “proper” British society.

The San Francisco Fall Show is officially open! Come visit us in Booth D13 to explore our many beautiful new pieces, like these exquisite 19th-century Salviati Murano glass vases.

These objects, made circa 1880, demonstrate Salviati's mastery of a variety of glassblowing techniques that were developed and used during the Renaissance. Salviati glass is a celebration of Italian glass history. Produced during the late 19th-century unification of Italy (the Risorgimento), the factory's revival of Renaissance glassblowing remarks on artistans' efforts to create a shared Italian history and style, connecting Italians across the entire peninsula.

✨️ On view now at the San Francisco Fall Show. Can't make it to the show? Browse our virtual booth on our website https://artistoric.com/san-francisco-fall-show-2023/, or contact us to arrange a video viewing. You don't want to miss it!

A sneak peek before tomorrow's grand opening of the San Francisco Fall Show 👀

This large Art Deco jardinière by Longwy is one of the many new pieces we're featuring at the San Francisco Fall Show.

Longwy is a French faiencerie famous for its imitation cloisonné relief-enameled decoration, seen here on this jardiniere. In this technique, the artist would apply the outline of the decoration in black paint, then painstakingly fill each “reservoir” with liquid enamel colors to create a bubble-like 3-D effect.

Each Longwy piece is extremely tactile and bold, and this stunning turquoise jardiniere is no exception. The design and color was inspired partly by Egyptian blue-glazed faience with underglaze black decoration, and partly by the 'Persian blue' glaze of Islamic pottery.

The Doccia Porcelain Manufactory, now known as Ginori, was founded around 1735 near Florence, Italy. As one of the early hard-paste porcelain producers in Europe, Doccia enjoyed great success in Italy, both among royalty and the middle class.

This Rococo dish, part of a dinner set for 12, shows one of the most popular Doccia designs: the "al tulipano" motif. Despite its name, the central flower is not a tulip but an interpretation of the peonies used in Chinese famille rose porcelain. Our dishes are from the mid-18th century, but Doccia produced this pattern well into the 19th century.

🦋 Objets by Daisy Makeig-Jones

We have two of these wonderful 'Butterfly' bone china boxes designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones in the 1920s, one in a beautiful mother-of-pearl lustre and the other in a gorgeous deep ruby lustre.

Small tabletop items like these were everyday luxury pieces for middle-class consumers. These boxes would have been placed on a vanity to hold little bits and bobs and elevate the dressing experience.

La Dolce Vita. The Sweet Life.

First coined in the 1960 Federico Fellini film of the same name, the phrase “La Dolce Vita” has been used to refer to a lifestyle full of indulgences, beauty, and appreciation of the little things that make every day special. For us, “La Dolce Vita” means surrounding yourself with beautiful, historical objects that speak to you and delight you.

Artistoric invites you to our booth at the San Francisco Fall Show to indulge in La Dolce Vita.

Join us on October 12 at the Fort Mason Center in SF, or sign up for our email list for a link to view our virtual booth. We'll see you soon! 🕶️ http://subscribepage.io/artistoric_email_list
