When Haile Selassie I—Emperor of Ethiopia periodically between 1930 to 1974, who was born on this day—made a state visit to the island of Jamaica in 1966, some 100,000 members of the Rastafarian group descended on the Kingston airport to greet the man whom they considered God incarnate.

In "An American Rescued in the Desert by The Mahdi and Emperor Haile Selassie" (1986) (pictured on the right), Robert Colescott depicts a Black American dressed in a tropical print shirt finding his own messianic rescue, supported by Haile Selassie and the Sudanese religious leader Muhammad Ahmad bin Abd Allah. This work recalls the myriad messianic narratives and political movements which called for diasporic communities to return to Africa—including the mission of certain Rastafarians as well as Marcus Garvey's “back to Africa” movement of the 1920s.
