Last night at the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion, John Foley President of Ireland’s Great Hunger Museum of Fairfield spoke to the audence at the Sold Out opening of THE JOURNEY OF HOPE: THE IRISH AMERICAN IMMIGRANT EXPERIENCE (on display 3/12 - 5/17 Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum 295 West Ave., Norwalk CT)

History is not just dates and facts.
It is the stories people leave behind for those who come after them.

Artists do this.
Children writing letters for a time capsule do this.
Immigrants who crossed oceans with hope in their pockets did this.

The story of the Irish during the Great Hunger is one of loss, resilience, migration, and the search for dignity.
It is also part of the story of America itself — a nation built, in no small part, by people who arrived with little but belief in the idea that this country could become something better.

That is why we are working so hard to build the Ireland’s Great Hunger Museum of Fairfield.
Not just to preserve history, but to preserve human stories — stories that can still teach empathy, connection, and understanding.

One hundred years from now, none of us will be here.
But the stories can be.

The exhibition promises to be a unique experience as it is displayed throughout the mansion’s Billiards Room/Art Gallery and Servants’ Quarters, an especially fitting setting given that many of the household staff who worked in the mansion during the 19th century were Irish immigrants themselves.
