❄️ In the winter of 1869, Paris was a city on the edge. It was elegant and bustling, but also full of quiet tension. Joseph Caraud used this time to inspire a quiet rebellion in the salon pictures the bourgeoisie so desperately adored. He let elements of the undesirables creep into his idyllic scenes. His art reminds us that change doesn’t always come with a bang, sometimes it comes with a whisper.

🇳🇱 Sometimes, past and present seem to echo each other in unexpected ways. We originally chose to highlight this painting in honor of an exhibition celebrating Artus Quellinus I (1609 – 1668), one of the greatest Northern Baroque sculptors, opening this week in Amsterdam. However, as we looked deeper, the story that emerged wasn’t just about a brilliant artist—it became a reflection on identity, history, and nationalism lead by a group of 19th century artists looking to recreate a sense of national pride.

🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 Jan Siewertz Kolm’s 1624 family portrait isn’t just a beautiful painting—it’s a heartfelt look into what really mattered to him and to most people in the Netherlands during the 1600s: family. This is the only known painting from Kolm, and that makes it feel all the more special. Out of everything he could have painted, he chose to capture his own family.

👑🇬🇧 Mathias Withoos (1627–1703) was a Dutch artist known for his particular gift for painting sottobosco — lush, forest floor scenes teeming with life. His works, often a little eerie or mysterious, blended scientific curiosity with Baroque drama. Withoos wasn’t a court painter or a figure in high political circles, but his name appears in royal inventories suggesting he was considered fashionable and intellectually interesting enough for Charles’s eclectic and ambitious taste. He didn’t have just one painting in the collection of King Charles but twice, including this picture.

🍍Jan Frans van Dael was born in Antwerp, and developed a passion for art at an early age, growing up in a city renowned for its artistic heritage. Around 1786, he moved to Paris, where he transitioned from architectural studies to painting, pursuing his passion for still-life art, earned him widespread acclaim and placed him among the most celebrated artists of his time. His ability to focus on universally appealing and politically neutral subjects allowed him to thrive during the French Revolution. His meticulous artistry captured the spirit of beauty and harmony in a time of chaos, making his paintings highly valued by both contemporaries and later collectors. Van Dael’s work represents the height of a new luxury market used to escape a tumultuous time in history.
