Nothing captures the distinctly 80s New York downtown energy better than this painting on paper, rendered in one take in Haring's signature "graffiti meets punk" style, a dynamite explosion of youthful exuberance. paper thank you as always for the great eye 📸

Standing in front of this painting makes me want to take up a baton and conduct the orchestra. This musical score of a painting is at once cacophonous and harmonious. I hear cymbals clash and horns blair, staccato noise and then a lull before the next crescendo. No one but Mehretu has this affect on me that's both body and soul. This particular composition is unburdened, almost joyous, and a foil to the ponderous black paintings displayed on a higher floor. Urbane sophisticated, work by a master, identified early on by a master art dealer, RIP Marian Goodman.

There is nothing quiet about the paintings of Alma Thomas, a force in the D.C. Color School, and one of the only Black artists to find success on her own terms in the 1970s, when she herself was in her 80s. Thomas's abstract painting seethe with energy, practically popping out of their frames with punchy color and rhythmic brushwork. An avid gardener and space exploration enthusiast, Thomas's compositions were informed by photos of planets taken by the Apollo astronauts, and the beautiful flowering trees and natural landscape surrounding her home. Bequeathed to the Smithsonian Museum by the artist, these deeply satisfying paintings boldly assert Thomas's place in art history.

Since the first hand print made 45,000 years ago on a cave wall, humans have attempted to answer the question of us. In the right hands (pun intended) art has a fascinating way of engaging this topic, which sits at the nexus of science and philosophy. New Humans, a brilliant, exhaustive and at times, exhausting exhibit, makes a visit to the newly expanded New Museum, doubly worthwhile- come for the building and stay for the show! I have truly missed this museum while it's been closed. The New Museum has an independent voice and a distinctly different point of view from other Manhattan-based cultural institutions. The new SANA building feels expansive but remains intimate, an architectural masterstroke and perfect container for this fascinating show. BRAVO!

Bove balls out at the Guggenheim in a retrospective that demonstrates her value add to the history of sculpture. Weighty, but never ponderous sculptures occupy the lower ramps while feathery lightness takes over as you ascend. The brilliant installation feels bodily, almost balletic. Bove is an exquisite colorist who has invented a new way to paint crushed metal that collides with twisted steel forms. Her sculptures exude warmth, power and grit. A generous spirit pervades this show, which includes art by some of Bove's art historical heroes, including a previously hidden Miro mural embedded in the walls. Frank Lloyd Wright would either be proud or jealous of how perfect this exhibition looks!

As if Shio Kusaka's ceramics weren't eye candy enough, they are shown to perfection inside the Ruyosukuin Temple in Kyoto, her first exhibit in Japan, alongside paintings by Jonas Wood. Witnessing the marriage between the work of two consummate artists and a stunning Zen temple is among the most aesthetic experiences of my life- like opening an exquisitely packaged chocolate box that contains morsels too beautiful to bite. I also had to post a few picks from the refreshingly uncommercial ACK (Art & Collaboration Kyoto) fair. Delicately presented on wooden trusses, thoughtfully chosen works of art look spot-on in this highly refined and cultivated city. The past few days have been the tastiest palette cleanser before the giga week of New York auctions ahead.
