It is with deep sadness that I share the passing of my dear friend Bruno Bischofberger — one of the most extraordinary figures in the art world, and someone who shaped my life in ways I could never have anticipated.

When I first met Bruno, I was just a teenager who liked talking about art.  But he took me seriously, telling me, “Look, you’re living in New York where all the great art is being done now. Spend time with the artists living and working in your own town.”  So I did, and I am forever grateful to Bruno for this advice.

Rest in peace, dear Bruno. The art world has lost one of its great souls.

Happy Birthday Keith Haring! Come celebrate with us at the Brant Foundation, where our “Keith Haring” exhibition is on view through the end of the month.

Keith Haring (American, b. 1958, d. 1990) remains one of the most celebrated and influential figures in American art, renowned for breaking traditional art world boundaries and transferring the energy of the East Village’s streets to galleries. Emerging from the downtown New York subculture of the early 1980s, Haring took inspiration from the everyday urban spaces he inhabited. From his spontaneous, early-career chalk drawings in subway stations, to his vibrant, pop-inspired works that addressed social issues ranging from the AIDS epidemic to the drug crisis, Haring shepherded a body of work that was both visually dynamic and socially engaged.

Our exhibition “Keith Haring” is now open to the public!

This exhibition brings Keith Haring home to the heart of New York’s vibrant Downtown scene, where his unmistakable visual language first electrified the city’s walls, streets, and subways. Spanning the critical years from 1980 to 1983, the exhibition highlights a precisely curated selection of major works that trace Haring’s meteoric rise from the subways to the gallery walls, from street interventions to institutional acclaim.

Less than one week until our Keith Haring exhibition opens on March 11th! A sneak peek at a work that will be on view: a monumental drawing that captures the urgency, rhythm, and energy of Haring at the height of his practice.

This large-scale sumi ink drawing from 1982 encapsulates Keith Haring’s ability to transform pure line into a dynamic field of energy, motion, and symbolic tension. Executed in black ink without the mediation of color, the work highlights the immediacy of Haring’s gesture: each stroke appears urgent, direct, and performative, capturing the rhythm of his hand in real time.

The central motif – a multi-limbed, serpentine figure radiating outward – evokes both mythological hydras, cerberus and urban graffiti forms, fusing ancient archetypes with contemporary street vocabulary.

Another round of tickets for our upcoming Keith Haring exhibition are now available 🎟️✨

One of the featured works in the exhibition is “Untitled” (1982). In its many variations, the dog is one of Keith Haring’s most recognizable motifs. The image emerged in his early drawings as an ambiguous animal that gradually evolved into a distinct, dog-like figure. Haring’s dog can be understood as a mythical creature—an anthropomorphic presence that stands in for humanity itself.

Haring created this piece by using Day-Glo paint. The first time Haring showed Day-Glo works was at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery in 1982, where he situated the Day-Glo paintings in a  Blacklight Room. These glowing works, filled with intensity both through the color and the environment in which they were exhibited, dissolve boundaries between the painting itself and the space it inhabited. The Day-Glo works suggest a dialogue between the visual culture of downtown New York graffiti, neon signs, and nightclub aesthetics.

Experience Keith Haring’s work in person. 🔗 Tickets available now via the link in bio.

The Brant Foundation is pleased to loan the work “Self Portrait with Suzanne” (1982) by Jean-Michel Basquiat to the exhibition “Basquiat - Headstrong” at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, on view through May 17, 2026. This exhibition is a major solo presentation of Basquiat’s works, focusing on the head as a motif.

“Among Jean-Michel Basquiat’s explosive and expressive output, there is a group of works – drawings in oilstick on paper, made between 1981 and 1984 – which revolve around the head as a motif and which are almost devoid of the symbols and text that are otherwise so characteristic of his practice. On show in the museum’s East Wing are now 49 of these works as well as one painting by the legendary artist – an exhibition that is the first comprehensive showing devoted to the artist’s depictions of the human head.”

On display in the center, 2nd from the left, is “Self Portrait with Suzanne” (1982).
