As a skilful figurative painter, Stéfan trained under renowned artists Diane Victor and Carl “Cuz” Jeppe at the prestigious Tshwane University of Technology’s (previously Pretoria Technikon) School of Art. During his tenure, he majored in Painting, Drawing and History of Art, being inspired by fellow South African artist Vladimir Tretchikoff, and the textured application of Lucian Freud’s more figurative paintings.
Stéfan spends the first decade of his career honing his craftsmanship in the theatre – accomplishingscenic and décor painting on sets for, among others, Celebration of the Century. During this time he is also employed as Art Director at the popular Ushaka Marine World, Durban, South Africa.
Many of his works depict the African woman with defined facial features in a romantic, almost idyllic fashion. With layers of paint, he uses his brush to make his mark with a combination of traditional elegance and contemporary modes.
Therefor he claims that there is no specific formula or technical recipe he follows. He prefers his themes and techniques to be fluid; a constant boundary spanning challenge to create “the ultimate work of art.”
