Spent the afternoon at Wrightwood 659 for Martin Wong: Chinatown USA — an incredible exhibition in one of Chicago’s most beautifully considered architectural spaces by Tadao Ando.

The show traces Martin Wong’s deeply personal vision of Chinatown, language, migration, q***r identity, urban life, and cultural memory through more than 100 works. Tender, strange, meticulous, funny, and heartbreaking all at once.

Particularly moving to see Wong’s relationship to Chinese identity explored with such nuance — especially for an artist who existed between cultures, histories, and cities. One of the strongest museum shows I’ve seen in Chicago in recent years.

Highly recommended if you’re in town this summer.

At Blindspot Gallery :
Swallowing Rumination Gracefully by Trevor Yeung

Yeung continues his long investigation into ecosystems of care—aquariums, filtration systems, and carefully constructed environments that sit somewhere between biology, design, and emotional metaphor.

The work quietly probes our desire to nurture, control, and project meaning onto living systems.

A restrained, thoughtful exhibition that rewards close looking.

The 14th Taipei Biennial 2025
Whispers on the Horizon
Opened last night
Taipei Fine Arts Museum
Curated by Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath, this edition brings together 54 artists from 35 cities worldwide, with 33 newly commissioned works and site-specific installations that respond to Taiwan’s layered histories and the architecture of the museum itself.

Exploring yearning — as memory, longing, and the space between hope and loss — the Biennial unfolds across time and geography, connecting the personal with the collective, and the poetic with the political.

Donald Locke: Resistant Forms
Spike Island, Bristol | August 2025

At Spike Island , I saw Resistant Forms, a landmark exhibition of Donald Locke (1930–2010).

Locke’s practice reshaped Caribbean modernism—ceramics, painting, and assemblage bound together with wit, history, and invention. His works juxtapose colonial legacies with fragments of the everyday, transforming them into objects at once surreal and grounded.

Knowing the work of his son, Hew Locke , it was powerful to encounter the father’s practice. An intergenerational dialogue in form and politics, showing how artistic legacies ripple outward across time and place.

Just over a year ago, I met Annie Chen in Jingdezhen, China. She welcomed me into her studio with open arms — we shared stories, laughter, a meal, and even some time at the wheel and piano. That day, I first encountered the depth of her practice.

Annie’s work reflects a truth we all feel but often forget — that nothing in life is static. Like clay in motion, she embraces change, transformation, and the beautiful tension between order and chaos. Watching her evolve over the past year has been deeply inspiring.

It’s been an honor to witness her journey and I’m so excited for everyone to experience this show.
