is no doubt part of art history, but he is central to the history of q***r art in the 20th century. He has never shied away from the aesthetics or politics of q***rness and has been fearless presenting imagery that is unapologetic.

McGough’s bricks, inscribed with the celestine blues, carnation pinks and Wildean fonts of a “Grand Queen”,
channel that presence and flip the narrative: they conjure defiance and resistance. They also reclaim a slur, dress it up, and press it into the service of art.
