The painting and I became a lifesized sundial, dodging the sun's shadows. I had to finish this match by painting quickly, anticipating its next move.

All these moving parts shape me. Moving parts shape the landscape too.

Cazenovia Creek, which we're just up the bank from here, has seen a lot of ups and downs due to human impact.

Here, we paint the understory of the canopy. These woods bolster the creek's health, helping it withstand forces like pollution, erosion, stormwater.

This is one of the main tributaries that feeds the Buffalo River, which drains into Lake Erie; by protecting Cazenovia Creek, we can help protect those other bodies of water too.

That's part of why it's undergone a series of restorations in the last 30 years.

From the shots from my 2nd camera, you’re getting a glimpse at how the painting is out of perspective from where I stand painting it. I've never gotten to show you this during the illusion process - only after the illusion is done and I move the camera.

For me, painting a scene that doesn't line up from where I'm standing is a disconnected kind of feeling. Like there’s an ocean between the painting and the main camera.

I do feel a little “marooned” when I’m over at the painting, not quite knowing for sure if I’m painting it right til I walk back over to check the camera.

Am I used to this? Yes. Although I know it’s a little dysfunctional.

Should I add a monitor, so I can see what I’m painting in real time? I’ve considered it before.

But the idea of doing that doesn’t feel right - at least not at this point in time. I've gotten this far in my career by doing it the "dysfunctional" way.....might as well continue.

I have a feeling I learn more by it being a harder process anyway. It challenges my memory and visualization skills more.

ROAD TO 100: A deer running past me; a fish in the water; a closeup of the process. There have been so many moments during my illusions that I wanted to share with you but couldn't.

I couldn't because moving my camera “breaks” the illusion. So I decided to figure out a 2nd camera.

Now, I can invite you to take a closer look at the process - even understand what the illusion looks like at different angles.

I won’t be able to use it for every single match, especially when there’s tight time or space constraints. But I’ll use it whenever possible!

It is indeed soft, fuzzy, oversaturated. This is a 10 year old camera that I've brought out of retirement.

Originally, I was just using this camera to test with. But I fell in love with that vintage look. It’s like the warm crackle of a vinyl record.

And I feel in some way, the difference in quality gives a different perspective to how we see the world - which feels especially relevant, meaningful, and thought-provoking for the topic of illusions.

Oh, and by the way, it’s still me filming the 2nd shooter as well lol. I’m not adding a cameraperson to the equation.

ROAD TO 100 SERIES: Over the next 12 months, we’ll be traveling to new places to count down from plein air illusion #91 to #100.

This series has been a long time planning and in the works, with a lot of heart put into it!

While it’s been fun getting the illusions as seamless with reality as possible, I want to shift the focus to finding more unique views around New York to paint.

There will be a couple matches around WNY, but for the most part, I’m trying to find places I’ve never seen before. I want to make this more challenging while also gaining new perspective.

#91 will be a bit of a pit stop at Cazenovia Creek to experiment with some filming changes.

After that, we’re headed east to chase down my highest elevation view ever painted!

Can’t wait to share these experiences together.

Getting the paintings to look good is what I care about – I'm not too concerned with my own appearance.

Lately, though, I've been working on growing my hair out, just for fun and the challenge.

And while I love being free-spirited and letting my hair do its own thing, I've learned to give it a quick brush before filming so it doesn't block my face in the shots.

I do feel there's some relevance between my long hair and the paintings – I'm just still figuring out what that is.

Seems like many of the great master oil painters I admire tended to enjoy painting hair that's classic length, like the length I've grown mine to.

Maybe I'm somehow trying to connect with their eye or appreciation for painting hair - the way it glows in the light and moves in the wind.

This is just a small snippet from what's been a very long hair care journey. Thanks for the chance to share it.

How is it almost leopard print but still blending? I don't know anymore. Camouflage has its own evasive set of rules I may never fully understand.

What I do know: when I'm out there, I'm never trying to “draw a tree”. I'm matching colors, textures, odd shapes.

I have to be willing to sacrifice making an idealized version of a “pretty painting” and just match what's right in front of me.

I let it become what it needs to be, not what I think it should be.

To stand out, I create paintings that blend in. It’s the biggest irony of my fine art career and one that amuses me.

Why would you want to make something if the end result is people don’t see it anymore? Isn’t the point of fine art for it to be seen, to exist, to be noticed?

Maybe.

But some of the best things in life blend in and go unnoticed, just like some of the plants and animals here at Ringneck Marsh that practice the diverse art of camouflage:

American bittern herons with their stripes, blending in with the reeds.

Animals recovering from injury, pretending to be strong so as not to look like easy prey.

Cattails blending into other grasses and marsh coloring to avoid getting eaten.

I have a long history with my own forms of camouflage, which offered me much protection during my life. I always found solace in nature, knowing the plants and animals were doing the same. In fact, it’s probably where I learned the art in the first place - imitating their example.

For many years, I didn’t understand the difference between parks and wildlife refuges. And growing up, my distinction between the two would have been “parks have playgrounds.”

I became especially aware of the parks/refuges difference after my Cape Cod matches. There, I witnessed a number of animals, even threatened species, having their migratory resting grounds impacted by human activity.

Refuges importantly put more responsibility on us as visitors than parks do. To keep them clean, to be respectful of the plants and animals, and to stick to paths that prevent spreading invasive species.

After every illusion, I research the subject matter, the natural history of the area, and special topics like parks vs. refuges.

It’s a chance to go deeper into these topics in a way I can’t fit into a shortform video or description, and allows us to grow together in our understanding of these things.

Wisps of clouds float through this illusion painting, although that may have not been evident in the videos.

That's a reason I continue to post process photos: Things stand out to me in new ways in the photos, and I'm always noticing something about the painting I didn't see before. And I want you to make your own observations too.

This is also one of the reasons I offer my art for sale instead of keeping them all.

On someone's wall, they appreciate the art fully, as it becomes a part of their daily life. And they'll make more and more observations as time goes on.

When you own a piece of fine art, you come to know every brushstroke like the back of your hand. The brushstrokes, colors, and shapes become familiar and homey.

And within you grows a sense of care and protection for the art. There's something vulnerable and innocent about them, like a child or a flower. It becomes reflex to look after them.

A bird’s eye view of the Niagara Escarpment, from Lockport. This will be forever etched in my memory.

For years, I’ve driven by various parts of the escarpment with no awareness just how big it was. This time, I consulted a map and was floored by what I found:

The escarpment is vast, stretching across Western New York through Canada and curving around Michigan and Wisconsin.

I found perspective and reflection here in the humbling view - respecting the greatness of nature and accepting my place in the world. Accepting that life is fleeting and recognizing the need to make the most of it.

There’s more meaning and backstory that goes into these illusions and choosing the locations than it may seem.
