Who remembers shopping at Ingerman’s Department Store on Main Street?

Abraham Ingerman arrived in New York City in 1908 after leaving his hometown of Gorokhov (then part of Russia, now Ukraine) to escape conscription into the tsar’s army. After marrying his wife, Sarah, he moved to Northport when a friend told him the village could use a good tailor.

His first shop opened in the building that now houses Coastal Cowgirl. As his business grew, Ingerman purchased the boarding house next door, moved it to create space, and built a new store between the two structures. He later expanded into the former boarding house and united the buildings behind a single storefront, creating the iconic Ingerman’s Department Store.

For generations, Ingerman’s was a Main Street institution, serving the community until 1996. Today, the building is home to Nest on Main and Northport Books. Be sure to look for the plaque on the exterior honoring Abraham Ingerman and his lasting contribution to Northport.

🇺🇸 America 250: May 27, 1777 🇺🇸

On this day in 1777, Reverend Joshua Hartt was arrested by the British for treason.

Hartt, the first pastor of the Presbyterian Church originally located in the Fresh Pond area, was known far and wide as the “Marrying Minister,” having officiated over more than 1,000 weddings. But during the Revolutionary War, his sermons became more than spiritual guidance. They became calls for liberty. From the pulpit, he urged parishioners to stand against British rule and support the patriot cause.

After the British occupation, Hartt was taken away in chains and imprisoned in the notorious Provost Prison, where legend says he befriended fellow patriot Ethan Allen. Despite the hardship, Hartt survived and returned home to continue serving the community. Later in life, he even advocated for the federal government to build a lighthouse off Eaton’s Neck.

As we celebrate America’s 250th, we remember the courage of those who risked everything for independence, including the voices that inspired a revolution. 🇺🇸

Throwback Thursday!

Who remembers the Bali Hai Night Club on Main Street and 25A in the 1960s? 🍹✨

This location at 647 Fort Salonga Road has quite a storied past. The site was also home to the Windjammer restaurant and The Cow Harbor Inn but originally, it was built as a private home in 1790 by John Scudder.

Located at the five-points intersection once known as Red Hook, the area was settled before the harbor end of Main Street developed. In the early 1800s, the building housed the John Scudder & Son store and, after 1820, became the site of the area’s first post office, known as Crab Meadow.

Later, it became the home of Edgar V. and Ella Call Burt. Pictured here with his horse “Pony” is Mr. Burt, along with members of the Call family: Clinton H. Call, Mary E. Call, Ella Call Burt, Etta C. Call, and young Frank H. Call — son of former Northport mayor William E. Call.

Today, the historic site is home to TD Bank.
