In the 1970s, the Chicano Awareness Center (CAC), the longest-running nonprofit organization, began hosting many festivities. To showcase performances, they would rent a stage from the city, providing a platform for both CAC performers and children's performances. Festivities would often be held in the basement of the center.

The Mariachi style also emerged during this era, exemplified by the Espejo Mariachi Group and the CAC’s Mariachi Group. Their attire was characterized by intricate, handcrafted clothing, reflecting the artistry and tradition of the genre.

Dr. Theresa Barron-McKeagney has been a dedicated advocate for the Latino community long before her time at UNO. She began her career as an education counselor at the Chicano Awareness Center in South Omaha. In 1989, she received an offer from the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO), which included funding for her doctoral studies—a decision that led to her long-standing career at the university.

Since then, she has held multiple roles at UNO, starting as an instructor, then serving as the director of the School of Social Work, and later as an associate dean at the College of Public Affairs and Community Service (CPACS). In 2013, she made history as the first Latina woman to serve as an associate dean at the university.

Today, Dr. Barron-McKeagney continues to shape future generations as a professor in social work at the Grace Abbott School of Social Work.

In honor of Women’s History Month, we would like to highlight some of the women making waves in the community and across the United States.

One such example is one of the few Latina female basketball teams that played at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church and participated in the Mexican-American Basketball Association. The association was formed in 1954 and continued for over 50 years. The Our Lady of Guadalupe Latina basketball team then went on to join the Our Lady of Guadalupe Athletic Club.
