Tonights ring this isnt as simple as it may seem because abalone has layers and if you just drill through any thick spot the edges you will see will not reflect color. so a precise calculation cut into basically only three spots on the whole shell will give me the edge color i want. than the shell or fragment has to be fifty years old at least to get the thickness needed. Its so rewarding to see it come through after dodging bug holes and burrowing clams its hard to get a great ring and thats why they cant be found in the market place. Most shells come from new zealand farms and are too way to young and thin for rings
