The Monon and the Nickel Plate Road were two of the most iconic railroads to serve the Hoosier State. Both roads are well-represented here within the museum. Between locomotives, rolling stock, and railroadiana, we have a vast collection that explains and depicts the history of both companies. Here, we see two locomotives in our collection posing together. Monon 82-A is an EMD F3A, and NKP 476 is an EMD GP9.

If you may recall, a few months ago, we posted a video of our Monon passenger train. It was being pulled by our C420. We teased, “if only we had a matching locomotive”. Well, here she is! Making her debut on the Indiana Central Railway Museum’s mainline, Monon 82-A! The 82 is an EMD F3. EMD produced the F3 between 1945 and 1949. Having a Monon F Unit really rounds out our roster, and is something we’ve been working on for a decade.

You can’t get more Hoosier than this! Our Monon C420 (ALCO) pulls a train consisting entirely of Monon equipment! If only we had a matching F3… 👀

In this video, we see NKP 476 pulling the Indiana State Fair Train across a matching NKP girder bridge. The F7 on the rear will pull the train back northbound. The Fair Train makes 10 round-trips a day, for all 14 days of the State Fair. Nowhere else in the country will you find what is essentially a commuter train consisting of such vintage equipment. Both locomotives are from the 1940’s/50’s, the stainless cars were built in the 1930’s/40’s, and the Pullman car was built around 1910. The Fair Train transports nearly 50,000 passengers each year (in a two-week span mind you!), easily making this one of our biggest money makers.

Two of our Nickel Plate Road diesels team up to pull a special trip. The featured power is GP9 476 and SD9 358. Both locomotives were manufactured by EMD. The passenger consist is a solid set of Budd cars. Notably, the coaches are all former Santa Fe, and were the first coaches in the US built with Air Conditioning. These coaches were built between 1937 and 1939. Bringing up the rear of the train is ICRM (Milwaukee Road) 83-A, an EMD F7.

Here, we see Milwaukee Road 84-A pulling an excursion. The 84 is an F7 built by the Electro Motive Division (EMD) of General Motors at their LaGrange, Illinois factory.

The expansion of operations calls for more capacity! Here, we see some “new” equipment fresh from the interchange with The Modern DT&I in Mitchell, Indiana being pulled to one of our yards by Nickel Plate Road 358.
