Food City

Food City Food City is a food forest turned community garden in the East Deutschtown/Spring Garden neighborhood. If you would like a plot, send us a message!

Food City is a permaculture forest garden created in Summer 2012 by the Food City Fellows program of the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh. It is a quarter of an acre (10,821 square feet) located on four vacant city lots and two privately owned lots in the East Deutschtown neighborhood. The cross streets are Tripoli Street, Retail Way and Lovitt Way. Ten teens and two program assistants worked to re

mediate the soil, build a fence and create designs for the space, while learning about the bigger conversation of how food impacts both local and global communities. The project was made possible by Alcoa Foundation with additional support provided by The Heinz Endowments. Special thanks to Cityview Church, the Community Alliance of East Deutschtown and Spring Garden, and Dzmako Management Group. Food City is run by neighborhood volunteers, and needs your help! Friend us to be informed of volunteer opportunities, and invite others to friend us, too! Future goals-
*rain barrel irrigation
*complete surrounding fence
*install an edible food forest with fruit and nut trees and berry bushes, and *understory species including herbs and flowers

1) New volunteer Kelsey worked with Kimberly Bracken to w**d two beds that will be planted with perennial flowers! We still have open beds if you want a garden plot!
2) False Indigo is in full bloom
3) keep eye out for spotted lantern fly nymphs right now. You can knock them into a container/ pitcher of vinegar and water to kill them immediately. They do hop a bit, but it’s easier to get them now before they can fly!

We have open garden plots available, spread the word! I w**ded the BlackBerry patch and reined it in a bit creating a border with some donated pavers, and seeded 10,000 ice plants as a groundcover. Ice plants are drought resistant, love full sun but can handle some shade, and bloom all summer long!
Also seeded wildflowers, dahlias and bachelors buttons a few weeks ago in the three troughs and they are popping! Thanks to our neighbor Phil Snow at Best 4 Less trees for dropping us a much-needed pile of mulch. If you need a tree trimmed or cut down, he’s your guy!

A Happy Birthday to one of our founders, Kimberly Bracken, as she dedicates her birthday to one of our Food City projects!

"Ten years ago, with the help of many, I started Food City, a permaculture Community Garden on the Northside. In honor of my September birthday, I am raising money to purchase perennials edibles (think asparagus and sea kale), native flowers, berry bushes and possibly more fruit and nut trees, as the site currently has an incredibly healthy 10-year-old hazelnut tree that just needs a pollinator! The site hosts 20 gardeners who each tend a plot, yet there is much room to create more beds. I am working with a horticulturist to pick out ideal plants for the different light and soil conditions on site, including installing a perennial flower border along the outer fence. We will also be planting a big stand of milkw**d and other wildflowers to feed the now-endangered monarch butterfly! Help me grow the biodiversity of this beautiful garden."

Thank you to everyone who came out for day 1 of Spring Cleaning 2021! Food City is going to look fantastic this year, and we've got a great community growing - both human and vegetation.
We hope you'll be able to join us for some more clean-up tomorrow, Sunday, April 18th from 10am-2pm!
*We also have a few plots still open for this year, so if you're interested, please message us!

A lot of progress was made at Food City over the weekend: Several plots cleared; lots of w**d whacking; a dead tree was cut down; an annoying bush was pulled out; w**d whackers were repaired; flowers and herbs were planted in the raised beds and some plants went in. Good work and thanks to everyone who stopped by to lend a hand.

Thanks to neighbor Travis Leivo of Shadyside Worms for delivering an entire mountain of compost. Donations like this are what puts the community in community gardening. Travis is a wealth of knowledge about all things gardening, from compost to cover crops. We’re lucky to have him just up the hill.

Huge thanks to Cityview Church for sending volunteers our way! Today we closed the small entrances on Tripoli and Lovitt, repaired the fence and replaced tons of broken and missing pickets, and planted two new plots. Next up: fresh paint and new signage.

I'll be at the garden tomorrow from 10 till 1 or 2 if anyone wants to stop by and say hello, check out their plot or help clean up. The crazy amount of rain that we've gotten has led to a crazy amount of w**ds. The garden is desperately in need of some attention.

Hi everyone! Just a friendly reminder to let me know if you had a plot last year and want to keep it. I've had a lot of new people reach out that are interested in a plot. My preference is to give the plots back to the people who had them last year. If I don't hear from people by the end of the week, I'm going to start reassigning plots so that people can view their plots when they come for the workday on April 13th. Thanks!
