WMCC VISIT
Nine members of The Wichita Militaria Collectors Club visited the museum on March 7th. The members have a wide range of collecting interest of various types of military items including uniforms, guns, ordinance, knives, and swords to name a few examples. They started their visit by watching a video on Pratt Army Airfield (PAAF) to get familiar with the history of the Airfield then toured the museum. One of the members, Shawn Stone, was born in Pratt and both his grandparents worked at PAAF during the war. Shawn also brought his sons, grandson and daughter-in-law along. The club and several club members made nice donations to the museum. The group had a nice visit and was impressed with the museum.

B-29 Museum Spring 2026 Newsletter.

Spring is in the air, so we kick off 2026 with a HUGE newsletter! Lots of interesting topics.

We start off with another one of our ‘More “Little Gems”’ topics about a 1946 pamphlet discovered in a donation, published by the Pratt USO just after the war, honoring the volunteers that put in thousands of hours at the USO.

We recognize Women's History Month by highlighting the Women Air Service Pilots (WASPs), WACs, Army Nurses, and Civilian Volunteers which served at Pratt during WWII.

Our Crewman of the Quarter is Robert R. Shoemaker, one of the unsung heroes of WWII which enabled the Army Air Corps to establish air superiority in the Pacific - The Aircraft Mechanics and Ground Crews which kept planes flying!

First in a series "Amazing Tales of Survival" - we tell the harrowing story of the crew of B-29 “Irish Lassie” which survived two rammings by Japanese Fighters, but managed to return to Saipan with the crew intact.

We highlight some great upcoming B-29 Museum Events, and local activities at other area museums and organizations:

06/06/2026 Third Annual 5K Run
Vietnam Display at Reno County Museum through November 2026
“Salute to Valor” Dinner and Speaker, held Saturday, April 11, 2026.

Lots to see and do this Spring!

BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATION! - February is designated as Black History Month. Of the 2,000 or so permanent base personnel assigned at Pratt Army Air Field (PAAF) during World War Two, 239 of them were Black Americans and assigned to different sections on the air field. The Pratt Army Air Field base newspaper, the TAILWIND, regularly featured the "Section C" servicemen's activities. We wish to honor all these fine individuals that supported the overall war effort.
