Leonardo’s underwater breathing apparatus is one of the clearest examples of how far ahead of his time he truly was.

Designed in the early 1500s, the device used a leather mask connected to reed tubes that floated to the surface with a cork buoy, allowing divers to breathe while submerged. Some sketches even suggest Leonardo was already thinking about pressure regulation centuries before modern scuba equipment existed.

But Leonardo became strangely secretive about the invention. In his notebooks, he refused to fully explain parts of the design because he feared how the technology could be used during underwater combat and naval warfare.

What makes the apparatus even more fascinating is how cryptic many of his notes were. Historians and engineers have spent centuries reconstructing how parts of the machine may have actually worked.

Five hundred years later, Leonardo’s inventions still feel futuristic. 🌊

The Codex Atlanticus is finding its home!

12 volumes. Over 1,000 pages of Leonardo da Vinci’s notes and drawings, carefully preserved and brought together through the work of Giunti Publishing.

Our library is being built to protect these works while allowing visitors to view select pages, with the full collection available for deeper study.

At (Gli Scultori della VelocitĂ ) in Florence, we stepped into a living tradition where speed is still shaped by hand.

We had the privilege of meeting Afro Gibellini, a renowned master battilastra from Modena and true “sculptor of speed.” As a longtime craftsman of bodies at Carrozzeria Scaglietti, he helped bring to life icons like the through the meticulous art of hand-forming aluminum.

He demonstrated the process in real time and invited us to try it ourselves.

Alongside these forms, we also encountered the engine itself—the innovation that first transformed energy into motion.

We were honored to be welcomed by Andrea Tagliaferri, Mayor of Campi Bisenzio.

Standing between Leonardo da Vinci’s earliest concept of a self-propelled vehicle constructed by the and machines like the Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, Ferrari 750 Monza, and Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe, you begin to see innovation not as a single moment, but a continuum shaped by human hands.

Yesterday in Florence, Italy, at 3:00 PM CET, delegates met at Palazzo Vecchio, for a formal welcome by the Comune di Firenze, including a private preview of the Sala dei Cinquecento.

We also presented gifts to the Comune, filled with artwork and goods from Pueblo, Colorado, assembled in collaboration with the (Pueblo Public Works), the (Pueblo Chamber of Commerce), and Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade.

From 4:00 to 6:00 PM CET, the program continued at the (Giunti Odeon in Piazza degli Strozzi) with an international tribute to Leonardo, bringing together leading museums and speakers, including a valued presence from the Leonardo da Vinci museum in China.

The evening highlighted the growing partnership with (Pinodia Sokcho, a Leonardo museum in South Korea), and we extend sincere gratitude to the opera singers they presented.

The day concluded with the official signing of a partnership between the Leonardo da Vinci Museum of North America and the Museo Leonardo da Vinci, establishing a pathway for cultural exchange and shared innovation.

During this gathering, Joe was presented by Giunti Editore with the full set of authentication documents for each codex in our complete library, along with a commemorative medal. The (Artisans of Florence) also gifted a handcrafted aerial screw in honor of Leonardo da Vinci.

It was such a pleasure to explore our sister museum in Florence, the !

As the city where Leonardo da Vinci spent much of his formative years, Florence offers a glimpse into the environment that shaped his curiosity, discipline, and imagination.

This is the city where powerful families like the Medici family invested in artists and thinkers, where the guild system trained young apprentices in hands-on workshops, and where masters like Andrea del Verrocchio mentored emerging talent. It’s here that Leonardo trained in Verrocchio’s studio—learning painting, sculpture, engineering, and observation all at once in a culture that valued both art and innovation.

Experiences like this continue to shape how we bring his story to life back home—rooted not just in his work, but in the world that formed him.

How will international collaboration and enrichment affect you?

We’re glad you asked.

Our approach to international relationships is built with our visitors in mind. Through time spent with our global partners, we’re exploring ideas for future exhibit experiences, potential museum network benefits, and thoughtful ways to strengthen cultural connection.

While these efforts take time to develop, they represent a step toward creating opportunities that could one day connect Southern Colorado more closely with places like Italy.
