Highlights from the SSU Art Collection: Kara Walker

Behind the scenes: Professional Photographer, Mark Serr, carefully photographs this delicate and exquisite pop-up book by Kara Walker

Title: Freedom: A Fable- A Curious Interpretation of the Wit of a Negress in Troubled Times with Illustrations
Date: 1997
Medium: offset lithographs and laser-cut paper, leather

Kara Walker is a contemporary American painter, silhouettist, and installation artist who explores race, gender, identity, and histories of slavery and resilience in her work. She is best known for her room-size tableaux of black cut-paper silhouettes.

Walker was born in Stockton, California in 1969, but was raised in Atlanta, Georgia. Walker received her BFA in 1991 from the Atlanta College of Art. She would later receive her MFA from Rhode Island School of Design in 1994. Walker's first large scale public project would take place during the spring of 2014, the installation being A Subtlety: Or… the Marvelous Sugar Baby an Homage to the unpaid and overworked Artisans who have refined our Sweet tastes from the cane fields to the Kitchens of the New World on the Occasion of the demolition of the Domino Sugar Refining Plant.

The Sonoma State University Art Collection, established shortly after the University Art Gallery opened in 1978, has grown significantly and now numbers over 1,500 works in a range of media, all of which have come to SSU through the generosity of individual and corporate donors.
