The mission statement for Gallery 14 said it wasn't sleepy, but now it sleeps. It sleeps the sleep of the dead; alive in memory, but dead to the world; dreaming dreams known only to itself. Like Fin-Fang-Foom, it slumbers, awaiting the call of utmost necessity. Will it ever awaken? Legend says that it will, but no mortal knows when.
Until then, it lies quiescent, in the zone that is after death, but before birth; in the deep midnight blue that is the region between. As I write this, I feel relief that the nightmare of moving is over, but also a sadness, a hollowness, that my kingdom is gone. Now begins the rest of my life. The adventure is over. The adventure begins.

As I write this, it is 2:01 AM, Sunday, October 11th. The closing reception has come and gone. Some of the loyal regulars stayed till just a little while ago. No musicians showed up. I won't say that they never will, but time is running out. We are now in the "afterlife" portion of Gallery 14's existence, after the last show has officially closed. But we are not yet truly dead; the art is still on the walls and we still have two more Saturdays before the end comes. I guess we're in limbo now--neither heaven nor hell. Will Oak Park Sam ever get to play the blues on my piano? Will Tristan and Brianna ever play and sing? Will Lala the bellydancer ever perform? Will some of my songs get their first live performance? The answer to all these questions is "maybe."
Show up next week to see if "maybe" can become "yes." And if that doesn't work, let's try for the 25th. Our last day here is the 31st, Halloween. Maybe we'll have a little party. It can't get the place too dirty though, because as of the 1st we have to be out of here, or pay the next month's rent. And $850.00's not in our November budget. Note: by the 31st the piano will have been moved--in fact everything will be gone. It will be just two empty rooms again.

As Gallery 14 is going out, we're having a few special events. This coming Saturday, September 20, we've invited a local Oak Park pianist to come by and play for us from 6-9pm. He's down on his luck, so donations will be appreciated. We'll post more information as it develops.

"Z" is the end of the alphabet, and "catching some Z's" means getting some sleep. This is appropriate, because Gallery 14 has come to an end, and we're tired. We're just not covering our overhead sufficiently to continue, so this is the last show. Gallery 14 is soon to be an ex-parrot. We'd like to thank all our visitors, patrons, and artists (many of whom are the same people). Thanks for the talent, the good taste, and the friendship. It's been emotionally rewarding these six years, but hard on our health, and we need some R and R. The gallery will have an online presence, but the free party is over. No more lemonade, no more cheese from Trader Joe's.
But enough sobbing in our beer (which we've never served; for beer, go to the Tallac Lounge next door). How about this show? Well, it's a continuation of the painted constructions I've been doing for the last 2-3 years. I'm always trying to break new ground in terms of fundamental formats for a painting, trying to go beyond flat surfaces flat to the wall, and in some of these I think I've succeeded. This would be a bigger, better show if I'd had more time, with my customary November slot, but I don't, so here it is; it's the best I can do in the time I have.
If I can, I'll include some conceptual sketches for my musical/graphic novel in progress, "Khemet: Flight of the Soul," that you may have heard about. And other stuff I never got around to doing these six years: A freestanding sculpture? A painting of a sexy n**e? No guarantees. Be sure to attend our closing reception in October -- maybe some of these projects will be realized by then. Again, thanks for the support. The tax business will go home with us, to a converted bedroom. My art and music will continue. We are not giving up, only retreating to a more defensible position. Onward and upward!

Okay, we need a bit of help. Our schedule has disappeared, and we have no idea who our May artist is. We may need to cancel the May show, anyway, but we need to contact the artist. Thanks!

This article about us was published in the East Sacramento News. It says nice things about us, none of which are true. I don't think he got a single fact correct, but it's entertaining anyway.
