Call of the Moose

Call of the Moose The Call of the Moose Minnesota, based on the lifetime achievements of Les Kouba, drives great outdoor traditions and the legacy of moose in Minnesota

Moose in Minnesota are in trouble. A 50% decline in moose population since 2010 has left the iconic Minnesota animal in real danger of disappearing. Les Kouba Marketing Group (LKM) and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) have signed a multi-year FIRST OF ITS KIND PUBLIC / PRIVATE AGREEMENT to advance awareness for the plight of the moose and to raise funds for moose research and ma

nagement. The CALL OF THE MOOSE MINNESOTA Campaign, exclusively utilizing the moose imagery of the legendary Minnesota wildlife artist, Les Kouba, is seeking business, sponsor and licensee partners who will receive a high level of exposure to residents and visitors of the State of Minnesota. Les Kouba

Internationally known as one of the world's foremost painters of wildlife, Les C Kouba is recognized as the founder of the wildlife art revival in the 1970s. - National Museum of Wildlife Art of the United States

Kouba's deep understanding of wildlife stems from growing up on a Minnesota farm which afforded him ample opportunity to observe and study wildlife in their natural habitat. Kouba left home at 16 to start his painting career. He soon developed his own unusual technique that immediately identifies his work. His exciting oils and dynamic water colors are known worldwide as some of the most authentic portraits of wildlife in existence. The distinguishing characteristics of the artwork of Les Kouba (the Kouba 'mystique') include the search for hidden subtleties in his paintings, the 'Kouba Dozen,' 13 of a subject matter, and of course, Kouba's instantly recognizable Asian-looking signature.

Minnesotans love moose! But sadly, this ultimate ungulate is in trouble in our state. Minnesota’s northwestern moose population has practically disappeared, and we’ve lost half the northeastern population in the last decade. Minnesota Zoo conservation scientists and veterinary staff have joined researchers across the state to understand the moose decline and find science-based solutions to help wild moose. In this photo from 2012, Zoo veterinarian Dr. Rachel Thompson prepares to ultrasound an anesthetized wild moose.

Lucy the moosey

There’s a moose on the loose in Highland Grove Township in Clay County, and the neighbors seem to love her. “We named her Lucy – Lucy the moosey. She’s been there over three months,” said Raymond Gierszewski, who lives about a half mile from where the moose likes to hang out n...

Next month, for the third time, researchers will try to put tracking collars on about 50 newborn calves in one of the most comprehensive studies ever conducted to find out why moose are in such perilous decline in Minnesota. But the calves’ mothers have abandoned those babies at painfully high rates.

Read below for more information on how researchers are changing their strategies to prevent the abandonment.
