Sarah Bussey Artistry Fine Artist: Oil Painter, Sculptor, Muralist

It might be a squirrel-sized oil painting… but I’m not putting it in a squirrel-sized gallery 😅

This little one was actually the first step toward the large painting next to it.

Before committing to a big canvas, I like to paint a tiny version to figure out what actually matters in the scene… the light, the balance, the feeling of it.
Because when a painting gets large, every decision matters.
This small study helped me strip away everything unnecessary so the final piece could breathe.
Kind of amazing how something this tiny can shape something much bigger.

Which one do you like more: the little study or the large painting?

We made a mad dash to cook everything we could while the power was on and one of those things was peanut butter cookies. A perfect drawing subject for another snow day! These are going to be some great memories with my husband and family surviving and thriving the snow storm of 2021
Hope y’all are staying warm and safe!

This is what you do when you are stuck inside due to snow and power outages happening. Today marks 3 days of the power going off here in Texas. We were blessed to be able to safely go to a family member’s house who has water and occasionally, power. Prayers for those who are without. Hope this brightens y’all’s day. Stay safe and warm everyone!

It snowed here and of course I had to paint this extremely rare event! ❄️❄️❄️

Here’s the backstory to this piece: The power is out, I accidentally left all of my good painting brushes in the car 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ from this past weekend, and due to there being too much ice on the stairs, I wasn’t able to safely go down to the car 🚗 (it was a slip and slide yesterday just trying to get up the stairs.)
However, I was determined that it was not going to stop me from attempting my first snowy plein air painting. (It’s too rare to pass up this opportunity) So armed with only had a few palette knives, a small round brush and an old messed up flat brush to work with I decided to set up my easel outside on our apartment balcony.
It was an exciting and new experience painting in the snow and in 9°F weather (never been this cold before).
Even though I bundled up, I couldn’t feel my hands which made painting a little more challenging, but overall it was fun and I would do it again!
I think it came out pretty decent for not having my normal tools in hand not too mention I couldn’t feel my hands.....or face.....or toes (I’m still defrosting) ❄️

It was a good reminder that there are only two choices, actions and excuses. Though it would have been much easier to use an excuse, it would be no where near as rewarding as taking action, getting out there, and creating something!

45 minute study for my art journal of a waterfall in Minneapolis. I am loving these short little painting sessions!

Also, I’m working on editing the time lapse now, so keep an eye out for it.

I’ve seen a lot of art journal posts lately and decided to try one out. I have to say that I like the relaxed feel of “journaling” with paint. This shoreline is actually from a photo my sister .lb took in Australia several years ago. The calming, cool, cloudy, muted tones of this seascape was a perfect fit for today.

Decided to explore some interesting textures with my palette knife. I wanted to make the background have some interest and I am loving how it came out!

I’m open to suggestions on what to name this piece. Let me know in the comments below!

Anyone else getting ready for Christmas?
We got our first Christmas tree this past weekend and so I decided to do a small study of one of our ornaments.
