What do you make when the material you've built your practice around disappears?

Meet Kelly Egan (), one of the featured artists in "Video Craft," whose film "Athyrium Felix-Femina (For Anna Atkins)," 2012–2016, asks exactly that.

When Kodak filed for bankruptcy, Egan, trained in film preservation at George Eastman Museum, turned to cyanotype, a process pioneered by Anna Atkins, the first person to publish a book of photography. She coated 35mm film by hand using Atkins’ recipe, arranged native plants directly on its surface, and exposed them to sunlight.

The result is a deep blue background layered with the transparent outlines of plants, interspliced with found footage of a young girl being taunted with a spider in a jar. The whole thing is stitched together by hand through the sprocket holes, carefully enough that it can still be disassembled and run through a projector.

"Video Craft" is now on view at the Museum of Craft and Design. Come see it in person and experience the intersection between moving image technologies and traditional crafts.

The architecture of technology, reimagined in textile form.

Richard Vijgen, featured in “Video Craft,” transforms invisible digital systems into woven form.

In his “Hyperthread” series, Vijgen translates the hidden code inside silicon into woven patterns, where threads intersect over and under. These patterns mirror the flow of electrical currents through silicon.

He scales up these microscopic networks into something we can see. What's usually invisible suddenly becomes something you can almost touch!

Step inside a world where performance, sculpture, video, and digital art converge.

In “Grog Cave”, 2024, William Cobbing (.cobbing) builds a cave-like clay structure by hand, its surface pressed, shaped, and marked to hold the trace of touch, but it is meant to be viewed as a geological structure made by natural forces.

Set within it, a small screen plays a video that echoes the material’s soft, shifting, and unstable qualities, showing Cobbing wearing a wet clay mask and wire-cutting through layered forms that release bursts of brightly colored paint.

Come experience “Grog Cave” for yourself along with all 19 artists featured in “Video Craft.” On view through August 16 at the MCD.
