La Rose des Vents, San Francisco

La Rose des Vents, San Francisco Finding a permanent home for la Rose des Vents, gigantic kinetic sculpture from French artist Jean-Michel Othoniel, in the San Francisco Golden Gate Park.

Help us to reach our objective to bring a new public art piece to the City. In September 2015, the non-profit art Gallery 836M was honored to welcome in San Francisco international renowned artist Jean-Michel Othoniel, and to host an exhibition of selected works. With the support of the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department, the remarkable gold a

nd aluminium kinetic sculpture ‘’La Rose des Vents’’ is installed in Golden Gate Park, in front of the Conservatory of Flowers. The sculpture pays homage to the compass rose, an ancient device used to gauge wind direction. It's a sculpture that embodies the longtime love for the symbolism and contemplative nature of flowers. The desert rose, delicate crystal formations that appear in arid places as fragile as glass, inspired JM Othoniel's design. Since its installation, it has been free to shimmer in the sun, move with the wind or glisten in the rain, intriguing and delighting tourists and residents alike. Thanks to the public enthusiastic welcoming of La Rose Des Vents, we now have an auspicious occasion to make it a permanent fixture of San Francisco.
