Diego Rivera’s massive 1940 mural "Pan American Unity" is a kind of “metaphorical bridge between the Mexican culture and the tech culture of the United States.” Seldom visited in its former home at the City College of San Francisco, the mural underwent a four-year, multimillion dollar move to SFMOMA where it will be enjoyed by many. Here’s the story of its transport, including a front row seat for the installation via time lapse video:

Diego Rivera’s rarely seen “Pan American Unity,” which celebrates the Americas, has been carefully extracted from its home at City College and moved to SFMOMA.

A group of cerulean blue Venetian glass beads - of a variety known as “Early Blue” and “Ichtucknee Plain” - dating to the fifteenth century have been discovered at sites visited in the past by inland Inuit peoples in northwestern Alaska, representing what might be the first documented finding of European materials in the Western Hemisphere. The beads would have traveled some 10,500 miles via China’s Silk Road and across the Bering Strait.

The beads, located in three Indigenous sites in Alaska, date to the mid-to-late 15th century, prior to Columbus's landfall.
