Drawn Together

Introduction by Sandra Enos:
In spring semester 2026, members of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at URI joined Honors students in Drawn Together: Intergenerational Exchange through Poetry, Letters and Doodling. The class taught by Professor Karen de Bruin, PhD. and Sandra Enos, PhD. was designed around intergenerational cultural exchange, offering OLLI members an opportunity to share their favorite poems (listed below) with Honors students who, in turn, shared their favorite music with the OLLI members. The class met over the course of the semester exchanging conversation and letters over issues surfaced by the poems – immigration, the American Dream, the place of nature in our lives, surviving in chaotic times and more. The students transcribed these poems producing over 200 illustrations. Curated by John Kotula, this exhibit showcases some of the students’ and OLLI members’ favorite work. Names of class members are as follows:
OLLI Members. Betty Bogutt. Jack Cottle. Aleka Chase. Amy Gaddes. Debbe Hayes. John Kotula. Larry Mandel. Judy Mandel. Maureen Mulvaney. Lyn Primavera.
Honors 147 Students. Sarah Beule. Marinna Chhoun. Maya Crawford. Anxhelika Deda. Amanda Feldman. Donnie Gardner. Lokelani Gayton. Erin Hanrahan. Jackson Irving. Mike Marino. Ava Maroney. Owen Masse. Abigail Oxley. Marguerite Oxley. Bradley Palmer. Justyne Paolino. Dillon Robidoux. Ambar Rodriguez. Sofia Rodriguez. Kara Rondano. Kaliegh Stenstrom.
Poems selected by OLLI Members. Expect Nothing (Alice Walker), Dutch Interior (May Sarton), The World is Too Much with Us (William Wordsworth), On the Pulse of Morning (Maya Angelyou) The Earth is a Satellite of the Moon (Leonel Rugama), Quarantine (Eevan Boland), America (Paul Simon), Listen to the Mustn’ts (Shel Silverstein), Apostrophe to the Ocean (Lord Byron), Try to Praise the Mutilated World (Adam Zagajeski) and One Today (Richard Blanco).

Curator's statement:
I was a participant in Drawn Together and was quite moved, informed, and inspired by the experience. It is exciting to present some of the work and process to the community through this exhibition. I invite you to pause your bike ride or stroll and spend some time with these poems and the illustrated transcriptions they inspired. I've included some of the poetry here and will post some more over the course of the show.

NEW ARTWORK IN THE WORLD’S SMALLEST ART GALLERY
BRITTA HART ON DISPLAY DURING MARCH AND APRIL

Artist’s Statement:
A mishmash of creativity, a very non-linear journey that still bounces around all the time!!! but one thing that has been consistent is that I make things, and will painstakingly do so for you in exchange for dollars if you ask kindly! From tattoo designs, to album covers, to backdrops and murals, to lil paintings or block prints and more. Been doing commission work for over a decade!! So if you have a random request, plz don’t be shy about shooting an email or filling out a contact form!
Figuring it all out along the way~
Big thanks to all who have continued to track with me throughout the years! And to anyone new!!!ALL MY LOVE,
Britta
Curator’s statement:
I first came across Britta’s artwork in Nico Scout, the lovely gift shop in Quo Vadis Square, next to The Blue Bird Cafe. I took one look at her vivid paintings of beetles and knew I wanted to see more. I contacted her and arranged for her to show in TWSAG. This was a week or so after the blizzard, so it took a half hour of shoveling to get access to the display cases. However, I think you will agree it was worth the effort… besides now the snow is all gone and you can walk right up and enjoy the art. There are plenty of bugs, a skateboarding cowboy you’ll want to take home with you, and other charming images.

Road Crossing Signs and Weather Vanes
Two Collections of Photographs in The World’s Smallest Art Gallery by
Andy Delong

Andy reports that he first started taking these photos around 2015. He got started on the road crossing signs when he was driving through the mountains of Nevada and signs for moose and elk were abundant. A little later he started focusing on the weather vanes around his neighborhood, Pawtuxet Village in Warwick. "People really have a thing with weather vanes in that neighborhood, especially Governor Francis Farm. I go through there on the way to the gym and started photographing them." Gradually, he realized he'd accumulated about 60 road crossing signs and over 100 weather vanes. "I never thought of showing them to anyone else. I was just collecting them for myself."

Curator's statement:
Andy is a good friend of mine and on more than one occasion we've been driving around and he's spotted a road crossing sign or a weather vane that he asked me to stop for so he could take a picture. Once we were in New Jersey and he said, "Oh... wait a minute... I don't think I have that turtle sign... eh, never mind I got plenty of turtles." I drove on. Five miles later he said, "Hey, could we go back for that turtle?" I turned around.

I estimate that there have been 160 art shows in The World's Smallest Art Gallery. What keeps me excited about being the curator is the times when I can say, "Well... we've never had a show like this before!" That is certainly the case with Andy Delong's collections of photos.

Artists are invited to show their work for approximately 2 months in this outdoor Kiosk, with two separate display cases measuring 37” X 36” X 2”. The backing of the display cases are cork. It is easiest to show works on paper, but small canvases, or other objects up to an inch wide, can also be accommodated. Materials, such as water colors, that are subject to fading, should be avoided.

The TWSAG takes no commissions on artwork, and sales are to be made directly between buyer and artist. TWSAG is not insured and artists display their work at their own risk. (In 15 years there has been no vandalism or damage to artwork.)

TRACY PAGE STILLWELL IN THE WORLD'S SMALLEST ART GALLERY

Curator’s statement:
During the months of August and September Tracy Page Stillwell’s installation “Former federal agents looking for peaceful work” will be on display inThe World’s Smallest Art Gallery. I am very excited about this show because it epitomizes the mission of TWSAG; to serve and please the community. It is an invitation to all who pass by to have a better day than you would have had if you hadn’t seen this art!
I think there are three modes of viewing TWSAG. The first is GO GO! These are the people who zip by on their bikes. They’ll get a glance at Tracy’s work that may not register as anything beyond bright colors a intricate patterns. However, these elements are so strong, they’ll put a smile on their faces and brighten their out look. The second mode of viewing is SLOW GO. These are the walker and the people who get off their bikes for good look. They will see this amazing collection of faces looking back at them. Here is proof that, YES! DIVERSITY IS AMERICAS SUPER POWER. How lucky we are to live in a time and place where everyone of these faces are recognizable as our neighbors, friends, and family. The third way to experience the art in TWSAG is NO GO. These are people who are there for as long as it takes to really take in the artwork. They are in for the best experience of all. You may feel skeptical when I say this, but after you look at this collection of portraits for a few minutes, they will start talking to you! I know this is true because that’s what happened to me. Read the comments on the individual portraits and I’ll tell you what they said to me!
Your comments are always welcomed.

The World’s Smallest Art Gallery
Presents the work of Katherine Thompson
June and July, 2025

From the artist:

Check out Katherine Thompson’s Zentangle series in the World’s Smallest Art Gallery in Wakefield! The kiosk is on the bike path.

Katherine Thompson makes a lot of art, like Zentangles. The Zentangles are made by creating crazy eight shapes with a pencil. She also sometimes uses a ruler to create vertical and horiztonal lines that overlap with the crazy eight. This creates a grid structure that she fills in with color using markers and colored pencils. She likes to make other things like drawing flowers with a vase, and she enjoys using stencils on tracing paper. She also weaves on looms. Some have said her Zentagle designs look like stained glass or a quilt. She hopes someday she can make a weaving or quilt that is inspired by her Zentagles. Katherine is an artist member at Out of the Box Studio & Gallery in Jamestown where she creates and sells her work. She loves to share her passion of art with others in the community.

***Please Note*** these are reproductions of Katherine’s original works to create a large-scale installation. To see the original works, visit Out of the Box Gallery in Jamestown!

From the curator:

The idea behind The World’s Smallest Art Gallery is that art, publicly displayed, is a gift to the community. There have been many great shows presented over the years, but I got to say I’ve never been more confident that the gift will be well received. So get over and take a look! The colors, patterns, movement, and jazziness of Katherine’s work is just joyous. Stand in fron of the display case for a few minutes and I’m pretty sure you’ll discover that the joy is infectious.

Art by Michael Becker in The World’s Smallest Art Gallery during April and May.

Artist’s Statement:
My work is figurative.

I think of it as like cultivating
the portrait of a flower I've met.
I find reasonable the thought
that others light the world
and speak through things.

I hear flowers mumbling sometimes
and I stand and I stare at them and
my work hopes to reproduce
the time I have with them.

My art is composed from cut
blocks on small canvas boards
and paper with oil and ink and
my poetry seeks to animate the
flowers and say something.

Curator’s Statement
Mike is a good friend of mine. He was coming from Minneapolis for a visit and I asked him if he would please bring some of his artwork to display in The World’s Smallest Art Gallery. I’m very excited to show you a little bit of what he produces. Mike is a guy whose mind works in complicate and interesting ways. I believe that, more than most of us, he see’s and is engaged by patterns and connections. This leads him into close examination of the way things are similar and different. He explores small variation in series of works that can run into hundreds of pieces. While the individual pieces are quite beautiful on their own, in my opinion, it is the patterns that emerge over an extended series that are really fascinating. Take a look at the six prints in TWSAG and ask yourself how they are connected, but then go to Mike’s Instagram to see a bunch more: https://www.instagram.com/4426507bm/

Art by Alexander Perrine in The World’s Smallest Art Gallery through January 2025

The Artist’s Statement
Daily, an American generates almost 4.5 pounds of trash -- more than a ton annually.
Will all of our trash simply outlast us? Or will it overwhelm the environment and ultimately destroy us?
These are the questions artist Alex Perrine seeks to raise through a series of sculptures created using discarded and found objects.
By showcasing objects people recognize from their daily lives, these sculptures become more personal, visually engaging, and thought-provoking. This body of work illustrates our dependency on the material world, and the harm done to the natural world -- and ultimately, to ourselves -- by the careless use and disposal of those materials.
Through his art, Alex seeks to encourage the viewer to think about humanity’s effect on the natural world, and provoke discussion about trash, recycling, repurposing, and the impact we have on the environment.

Curator’s Statement
Alex Perrine was given a cache of costume jewelry when the previous owner died. He used it to create the three glittering, gorgeous pictures of skulls on display in The World’s Smallest Art Gallery. This is “memento mori” artwork; a Latin phrase meaning ‘remember you must die’. The images themselves, and the backstory of the materials they are made of remind us that life is short and fragile. However, it is striking that these pieces are not morbid in the least. They are bright, beautiful, and celebratory. I think the statement they make is something along the lines of, “Yeah we’re all going to die, but that’s not going to keep us from having a hell of a good time until it happens.

Check it out and share your thoughts in the comments.

Now on display in The World's Smallest Art Gallery
The photos of Benjamin Cruz Del Rosario
Through November, 2024

Artist’s Statement:
Hello my name is Ben del Rosario. I am a photographer and I have autism. I have been taking pictures since I was 4 years old. I started with a disposable film camera, now I use a digital camera. I am inspired by nature, wildlife, industrial architecture close-ups, fire department equipment and unique metal objects. I believe having autism helps me see things that other people may not notice, which makes my photography unique.

Curator’s Statement
In his statement, Ben del Rosario posits that he may have a unique vision as a photographer because he is a person with autism. I’ve been thinking about that statement since I read it in his artist’s statement and I think it makes a lot of sense. The idea of “identity” has much currency in the arts at this time. It is also widely applied in culture and politics. It suggests that in addition to creativity, talent, and practice, an artist’s work will reflect who they are and that further, to understand an artist’s work, you should consider their identity and lived experience. Certainly, Ben’s beautiful, colorful photos are engaging on many levels. However, while you’re enjoying them, I’d invite you to consider his idea that they may present a unique vision because they were made by a young man with autism.

To see more of Ben's work, check out his Instagram .
