Located in the constellation Ophiuchus, M14 is 29,000 light-years away from Earth and best observed in the month of July.

M14 is another of the 29 globular clusters in the Messier list. They are all groups of stars bound tightly together by their gravity, but M14 stands out because in 1938 for a brief few weeks during the summer, it played host to a nova, a stellar eruption where a star grew far brighter than normal for a period of time.

Only twice in history have novae ever been observed in a globular cluster, and this one was even photographed! The photo was taken completely by accident by the 72 inch telescope at the David Dunlap Observatory near Toronto, Canada and the nova itself was only discovered from this picture 25 years later by Amelia Wehlau while looking through old data.

Since then, scientists have tried to find the exact star system of the 150,000 stars in M14 that were the cause of the nova. Finally in 2025, the Hubble Space Telescope was asked to help with decades long search and has managed to narrow it down dramatically.

Discovered in 1714 by astronomer Edmond Halley (of Halley’s comet fame), M13 is another globular cluster in our Messier list. A globular cluster — a group of stars bound together by their gravity, with most of its stars concentrated at the center — M13 is one of the brightest and most impressive star clusters visible in the Northern Hemisphere. Because of that it’s often called the Great Globular Cluster of Hercules. This star cluster spans 145 light years across and has an estimated 300 to 500 thousand stars within it. Stars are so crowded at the core of this globular cluster that they occasionally collide and form new, younger stars — many of which are the blue stars we see in our images of the cluster.

M13 also helped solve a problem scientists were having in 1974. At that time scientists were wondering, like we do today, if life could exist around other stars in the Universe, and decided to send a message out with information about Earth and Humanity to say hello to potential neighbors. Their problem: Where to send the message so that it would have the best chance of being seen? M13 was the perfect choice — with so many stars packed together, the odds of finding intelligent life were considerably raised.

Sent out from the Puerto Rican Aricebo Observatory, the “Aricebo Message” is still traveling to the cluster today. Maybe one day in the far future someone might just respond?
