William and Elizabeth Doane purchased this late Federal-style house in 1875 as a summer retreat in Stockbridge, a growing seasonal destination for New Yorkers. In 1900, they added a Shingle Style wing with a porch overlooking the Housatonic River. The Doanes and their daughter, Marie Vipont Merwin, traveled widely, collecting European and American furnishings to decorate their home. Today, Merwin House displays the family’s collection and tells the story of Mrs. Merwin, preserving the legacy of a cultured, well-traveled family and their life in the Berkshires at the turn of the twentieth century.
