Callanish Stones, Lewis, O.H.
Scotland
“I don’t think the similarity between the plan at Newgrange and at the Callanish I site is a coincidence. I’m still reflecting on it. It seems to me that Callanish I is more about women and the moon, the female, rather than the sun, the male. It is a site of women, for women. The place wakens the mysterious sixth senses. I pause, stand still, un-focus on oohing and ahhing over the physical, close my eyes, and just feel. The stones seem to have a presence, a sense of being, not just of cold rock, but of individual women—a girl here, an aunt there, grandmother, clan leader, seer, mothers. Many mothers. Perhaps mothers standing witness for Mother Earth herself in awe and reverence of life, renewal, and wisdom. The sense from the stones made me whisper, to walk with awe, humbly, yet proud to feel this ancient connectedness. One stone only seemed to represent the male—the tall, slender, stone at the center opposite the entrance to the relatively small cairn.”
