artexstyle: 10 Artists to Follow if You Like Ruth Asawa

Ruth Asawa's work is the subject of an expansive exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. If her ethereal forms have caught your eye, you’re not alone. Asawa’s work continues to resonate—captivating global audiences with its organic beauty and defiance of gravity.

At browngrotta arts, we’re inspired by the same spirit—where material, movement, and light come together in unexpected ways.

New this Week: Towels O by Misako Nakahira

We were excited to feature work by Misako Nakahira in our recent exhibition, Field Notes: an art survey. Through layered stripes in bold yellow and orange, Nakahira explores the illusion of connection in today’s social media echo chambers. Her work, like Towels-O-, draws on everyday motifs to reflect on caution, perspective, and the need for broader societal understanding.

Happy Belated Birthday, Chris Drury!

We hope you join us in wishing artist Chris Drury a very happy birthday. In his work, Drury creates work that fits with needs of the community and is integral part of the landscape, using whatever method or material best suits idea and place.

He has worked extensively with small communities in Europe, Japan and America. He has a new book, Heart Soul Mind, the result of his career working outside and on paper for over 40 years.

We love seeing what he creates!

Happy birthday, we hope the year ahead is good to you.

arttextstyle: Dispatches Connecticut

We’ve been taking our own advice — and hitting the road to explore some remarkable fiber art across Connecticut!

In our own backyard, we caught Julia Bland’s Woven in the Reeds at the Aldrich Museum in Ridgefield — a monumental tapestry blending sacred geometry, psychedelia, and deeply personal narratives. Her work is also on view at WEFAN in West Cornwall through June 28 — a gem of a show featuring many artists from browngrotta arts like Ed Rossbach, Dorothy Gill Barnes, Norma Minkowitz, and more.

We also made a stop at Silvermine Galleries in New Canaan, where Fiber 2025 is showcasing over 30 artists — including 19 browngrotta artists! Join Tom & Rhonda there on June 7 at 2:30 for an in-depth talk.

Wherever you’re based, these are fiber journeys worth the drive. To read more, visit https://arttextstyle.com/2025/06/04/dispatches-connecticut/

New this Week: 32 Selvages with 16 Ends by Hisako Sekijima

Artist Hisako Sekijima’s 32 Selvages with 16 Ends reveals the artist’s continued exploration of the sculptural possibilities of fiber.

Sekijima is known for redefining the traditional boundaries of basketry—emphasizing the structural over the functional. In this work, repetition and rhythm take center stage, with each module meticulously constructed, echoing the harmony and tension of woven form. The result is a piece that speaks to both materiality and meaning.

Neha Puri Dhir‘s textile study has also been broad-based, including time at the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, India, studies in Italy, Latvia, the UK and a workshop with Americans Yoshiko Wada and Jack Larsen. Dhir’s Zazen was realized using a contemporary adaptation of traditional stitch-resist dyeing technique of shibori. It was inspired by Japanese Zen gardens where effort is made to remove the unnecessary and concentrate on the true essence.

Hanna Czajkowska is among the artists at the forefront of the contemporary fiber art movement. Tapestry weaving in Poland in the 60s, “emerged at the crossroads of painting and unorthodox weaving techniques,” wrote Danuta Wrobléwska in 1983.

Czakowska stressed the structural and emotional role of color. She attached importance to studies from nature which meant rendering the visible world with its multitudes of shapes. Herbs is an evocative work that has found an ideal home.
