Through its collection and archives of more than 10,000 artifacts and oral histories, exhibitions, educational programs, and events, the Museum makes relevant connections to the Hellenic legacy for its audiences. We do this because we believe in the value of celebrating the threads that bind us together, across cultures, ideas, and miles. Founded in 1983, the Museum opened its landmark building in

Chicago’s historic Greektown in 2011. It seeks to share the richness of the Hellenic legacy in a way that is accessible and inspiring for people of all ages and backgrounds.

National Hellenic Museum and the Heritage Museum of Asian Art invite families and communities to this spring’s Museums in Conversation collaboration. Together we will explore how culture is kept alive and passed from one generation to the next. While rooted in different traditions, both museums share a deep commitment to celebrating the everyday practices, stories, and rituals that connect people to their heritage. This collaboration highlights preservation as something we all take part in, whether through conversation, shared experiences, or time-honored traditions.

Our first event, A Community Approach to Preserve Heritage, is a hybrid roundtable co-presented by the National Hellenic Museum and the Heritage Museum of Asian Art that brings together scholars, archivists, families, and community members to discuss collaborative, cross-cultural approaches to preserving cultural memory and community histories for future generations.

📆 Friday, May 29, 2026, 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM

📍 In Person: Heritage Museum of Asian Art, 3500 S Morgan St 3rd Fl, Chicago, IL 60609, USA

🌐 Online: Join us virtually from anywhere in the world

Today, May 19th, is the Day of Remembrance of the Pontic Greek Genocide. The National Hellenic Museum honors the memory of Pontic Greeks who were persecuted, displaced, and killed.

For centuries, Pontic Greeks built vibrant communities along the Black Sea coast, preserving a rich culture, language, music, and traditions deeply connected to the wider Greek story.

At the National Hellenic Museum, we believe remembering matters. By preserving and sharing these histories, we honor those who were lost while ensuring future generations understand both the fragility of human dignity and the resilience of culture and community.

The National Hellenic Museum is a nonprofit public history museum located in Chicago’s historic Greektown neighborhood, with a mission to share Greek history, art, culture, and the Greek American story in ways that feel relevant and meaningful today.

We bring the Greek American experience to life through engaging exhibitions, dynamic programs, and spirited community events that celebrate both legacy and possibility. Our collection of over 10,000 artifacts and oral histories tells a powerful story—one that shares the personal journeys of immigrants shaping life in America.

We are not just looking back, we are creating space for dialogue, discovery, and connection.

Through the lens of Greek history and culture we highlight universal themes of identity, migration, resilience, belonging, and connection. In doing so, we build bridges across generations and cultures, making the National Hellenic Museum a place for all who seek to understand themselves and others.

Today, and every day, we recognize the power of museums to foster dialogue, inclusion, understanding, and peace within and between communities worldwide.

It was our thrill and honor to partner with h the Consulate General of Greece in Chicago and the University of Chicago Center for Hellenic Studies to co-host last night’s celebration of Ithaca by C. P. Cavafy, and to honor Consul General of Greece in Chicago, Emmanuel Koubarakis, and Consul of Greece in Chicago, Georgia Tasiopoulou.

As their tenure in Chicago comes to an end, we reflected on their extraordinary work building community and promoting Hellenism throughout the consular region. “Ithaca” was chosen for its focus on the journeys we take and the people and experiences that shape them.

The highlight of the evening was a reading of “Ithaca” in multiple languages by members of the diplomatic community. Representatives from Egypt, Ecuador, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Serbia joined us for this moving tribute, which demonstrated the profound impact Mr. Koubarakis and Ms. Tasiopoulou have had not only on the Greek American community in Chicago, but also on the broader diplomatic corps.

While we are saddened to see their time in Chicago come to an end, we know that their impact on our community and region will continue for years to come.

We are extremely grateful to our partners at Enosis Federation Illinois and the University of Chicago for helping us bring this celebration to the public.
