This is one of our more difficult posts to write. Sharing it is an act of appreciation and gratitude for the life of Ardis Parshall. Ardis died suddenly last month at the age of 66.
Peggy Fletcher Stack wrote a beautiful article for The Salt Lake Tribune that began: "Ardis Parshall lived alone with her cats in a Salt Lake City apartment for much of her life. She had no advanced degrees, and, for most of her career, no phone or car. Yet — with her superhuman typing, command of French, determined work ethic, dogged sleuthing, eagle eye for underappreciated documents, and uncanny nose for a good story — she became indispensable to Mormon historians everywhere. From her perch behind a computer screen and beside a tower of beloved books, Parshall created an extensive online community, where she helped scholars connect missing pieces in the present to the jigsaw puzzles of the past."
Ardis spent most of her life giving voice to those whose voices were taken from them and whose lives were tossed into the dustbin of history because they were not deemed important enough to be remembered. Many of those whom she dug out of that dustbin were African Americans. As one of our Consultants she often guided, always taught, was consistently ready to help, and often did research for us. She was also one of our secret monthly supporters. Ardis expressed the value and importance of the work we do by her research support, her encouragement, and her monthly dollars.
We loved and love Ardis and miss her for those whom she found and for the kind, giving, and caring person she was. Our world cannot afford to lose the kind of person Ardis was while here.

Our Executive Director Robert joined with others in Ardis' requested brief graveside service to sing her home. He specially selected the old gospel hymn "Hold On" to honor Ardis.

Whether you knew her not, most of the historical finds you read on social media were touched by her in some way, including many of ours. If you want to help Honor Ardis Parshall by Preserving Her Life’s Work, you can use this link:

Underground Railroad Museum Sues Trump Administration Alleging it Canceled Grant on the Basis of Race

An Underground Railroad museum in upstate New York alleged in a lawsuit Friday that the Trump administration unlawfully terminated its federal grant on the basis of race, pointing to President Donald Trump’s efforts to dismantle diversity-focused initiatives.

The Underground Railroad Education Center in Albany, New York, alleges that the National Endowment for the Humanities’ cancelation of a $250,000 grant amounted to viewpoint and racial discrimination, violating the First and Fifth Amendments, respectively.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York, calls for the funds to be reinstated.

The suit cited Trump’s January 2025 executive order that required federal agencies to eliminate any operations supporting diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives within 60 days. The 40-page brief outlined 1,400 grants that were terminated in early April 2025 “for their conflict with President Trump’s EOs and the new agency priorities adopted in their wake.”

Nina Loewenstein, a lawyer for the museum, told NBC News that there is “just no legitimate basis” for the grant’s cancellation, adding that it is “just explicitly erasing things associated with the Black race.”

Loewenstein and the team of lawyers volunteering on the case through Lawyers for Good Government, an organization that provides free legal services for civil and human rights cases, argued that the Underground Railroad Education Center is just one of thousands of organizations that have been unlawfully targeted by the Trump administration.

Our Exec. Director Robert and our Director of Research Alice were invited to take an exhibit and discuss Black History to a group of youth at a church. Utilizing three questions -- WHY study and learn Black History? WHAT can we learn from Black History to help us? WHAT makes Black History important? -- they engaged in a deep and interested conversation with this group of youth who ranged in age from 13 to 18. By listening to each answer the youth knew what they said was important. Following Alice's invitation to "Come meet a few of my friends" many stayed afterwards to enjoy the exhibit and ask questions. Who says youth are not interested in history?

Afterwards Alice was presented with a double (24 count) bouquet of beautiful red roses.

SLAVERY EXHIBIT RETURNS TO PHILADELPHIA MUSEUM FOLLOWING JUDGE'S IRDERS THAT CITED ORWELL'S '1984'

"The National Park Service has begun restoring the panels that were removed from the slavery exhibit at the President's House in Philadelphia.

The restoration comes after U.S. District Judge Cynthia Rufe ordered the Trump administration to do so by 5 p.m. on Friday [the 20th].

The boards and panels that were removed told the stories of Austin, Christopher Sheels, Giles, Hercules, Joe Richardson, Moll, Oney Judge, Paris and Richmond -- the nine enslaved Africans held by Pres. George Washington at his home in Philadelphia.

They were removed to comply with President Donald Trump's March 27, 2025, executive order, "Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History," which directed the Interior Department to remove what they called "divisive, race-centered ideology" and narratives from federal cultural institutions."

LET’S LOVE PEOPLE WELL

You were created for community. When God designed humans, He made us with the intention of placing us within a loving family. Today, we call that family the Church.
God’s original intention was that we would exist within a family of other believers. He didn’t intend for us to exist in isolation or be separated from other people. Life was not meant to be lived alone.
Regardless of what your family experience was like, God intended for His family to be loving and caring. And it’s the qualities of God’s family that Paul is writing about in Romans 12. Paul says to be devoted to one another in love. That means that we are to walk alongside other people through the various seasons of life. We should never abandon people when life gets hard.
Paul also encourages us to honor others. Instead of seeking self-recognition, we should honor and encourage each other. Instead of pursuing what seems best for us, we should seek the good of other people first.
Devotion and honor are just two aspects of loving people well, but Jesus said that the world will recognize us as His disciples by the way that we love. This means that we have to genuinely love others—not just pretend to love them. And the place we need to start showing genuine honor is within our spiritual family. Rather than letting self-promotion divide the family of God, our goal should be to honor those around us.
If we won’t learn how to love people who follow Jesus, then we won’t know how to love people who don’t.
That’s why we should frequently pause and take an assessment on how we are doing at loving others. So take a moment right now to think about the ways in which you loved and honored people this past week. Write down two or three things you can do to continue to show love to those in your life.

Join us tomorrow (Saturday the 7th) for presentations on Utah Black history.

The morning session has our Black Motorist's Safety Travel Guides Research Team presenting. This team of student researchers and their Team Lead will present on African Americans traveling during the time of segregation, the need for safe places along the way, and how safe places that were found within Utah.

The afternoon session has independent researcher Jessica Guyyn presenting on women who owned some of those safe places in Utah.

Stay for all presentations. Stay for one. Visit our exhibit on the 6th floor of a few of the men and women of Utah's history, read their stories of resilence and work, and learn of their contributions to our state.

Thanks to Millcreek City ALL of this is FREE.
