We had a great time tonight sharing the story of the Wetumpka Impact Crater with Girl Scouts from across Alabama.

As part of the 2026 Alabama Girl Scout Camporee at Fort Toulouse - Fort Jackson Park, we had the opportunity to talk about asteroids, meteorites, and the impact that shaped our community. We also explored what to look for in the night sky before the girls headed out on their nighttime hike.

Thank you to the Girl Scouts for the invitation and for your enthusiasm for science and discovery. We loved being a part of it!

Today we celebrate our incredible volunteers on National Volunteer Recognition Day.

Our volunteers help welcome and educate thousands of visitors each year at the Wetumpka Impact Crater Discovery Center, and we are so thankful for the time, passion, and heart they share with our community. Your support helps us tell the story of one of Alabama’s most unique natural wonders.

We’re also looking for more volunteers to help staff the Discovery Center on Saturdays. If you’d like to get involved, send us a message. We’d love to have you be part of the discovery.

Thank you to our amazing volunteers for all you do!

As Alabama Impact Crater Discovery Week comes to a close, we are incredibly grateful to all of the partners, sponsors, and especially the volunteers who helped make this week possible.

Over 7 days, we hosted 10 events and welcomed more than 1,000 participants from here at home, across the country, and around the world. That kind of response is incredibly exciting and speaks to the significance of the Wetumpka Impact Crater and the growing interest in its story.

Every event, tour, program, and presentation was part of a greater mission: advancing education, encouraging discovery, and supporting the preservation of one of Alabama’s greatest natural disasters and most unique geological landmarks.

Thank you to everyone who attended, supported, partnered, volunteered, and believed in this mission. We are proud of what this week represented, and we are even more excited about what lies ahead.

Keep an eye out in the days ahead for more photos from the inaugural AL Crater Week!

☄️ Our friends at WOW on Bridge Street are turning up the heat with a crater-sized challenge, and we love it! 🔥

Introducing the Meteor Mouth Meltdown — a fiery hot wing challenge inspired by Wetumpka’s very own impact crater! This creative (and extremely spicy) twist celebrates one of our favorite things: the power of a cosmic collision.

Think you’ve got what it takes? Eat 6 blazing hot wings in 5 minutes and earn your spot on their Wall of Flame. Whether you’re in it for glory or just here for the show, it’s a fun way to taste the heat of the impact!
