Did you do any stargazing this past weekend? 🌌

On Saturday, June 27, near-Earth asteroid 152637, also known as 1997 NC1, made its closest approach to Earth in more than 400 years. While Earth was never in danger, this was still a significant flyby.

At its closest point, the asteroid passed more than six times farther away than the Moon. Scientists estimate 1997 NC1 is between 0.7 and 1.6 kilometers wide. An object of that size, if it ever struck Earth, could create a crater several miles wide and send dust into the atmosphere, affecting climate conditions around the globe.

That is why scientists keep a close eye on near-Earth objects.

Here in Wetumpka, we know better than most that impact events are not just science fiction. They are part of Earth’s history, and our own Wetumpka Impact Crater is a remarkable reminder of the powerful forces that have shaped our planet.

This week's meteorite impact may not have been in Alabama but our state has plenty of significant history with fall events.

We had a great time tonight sharing the story of the Wetumpka Impact Crater with Girl Scouts from across Alabama.

As part of the 2026 Alabama Girl Scout Camporee at Fort Toulouse - Fort Jackson Park, we had the opportunity to talk about asteroids, meteorites, and the impact that shaped our community. We also explored what to look for in the night sky before the girls headed out on their nighttime hike.

Thank you to the Girl Scouts for the invitation and for your enthusiasm for science and discovery. We loved being a part of it!

Today we celebrate our incredible volunteers on National Volunteer Recognition Day.

Our volunteers help welcome and educate thousands of visitors each year at the Wetumpka Impact Crater Discovery Center, and we are so thankful for the time, passion, and heart they share with our community. Your support helps us tell the story of one of Alabama’s most unique natural wonders.

We’re also looking for more volunteers to help staff the Discovery Center on Saturdays. If you’d like to get involved, send us a message. We’d love to have you be part of the discovery.
