“As different as a moonbeam from lightning, or frost from fire.”― Emily Brontë, Wuthering Heights

❄️ Yosemite has transitioned from a frosty winter to a hot summer. While winter's snow is still melting over Yosemite's waterfalls, the weekend's forecast predicts hot and smoky conditions:

🔥 The Pika Fire, sparked by a lightning strike on June 29, is currently burning just west of North Dome.

🔥 Smoke from the fire has been impacting Yosemite Valley, especially overnight and in the morning and clearing by the afternoon. To monitor air quality in Yosemite Valley see: https://bit.ly/3PWvSGg

🔥 Yosemite Fire Crews are currently using a confine and contain strategy.

🔥 "A confine and contain strategy under favorable conditions allows fire to move naturally across the landscape, providing ecological benefits to plants and wildlife, while also meeting protection objectives to minimize risk to people and infrastructure."

🔥 There is an Excessive Heat Warning in effect Saturday through Monday with forecasted highs in Yosemite Valley over 100 °F/ 38 °C. Avoid strenuous activity in the afternoon, stay hydrated, and eat salty snacks.

🔥 If you are planning on coming to the park, try out the new traffic alert system by texting YNPTraffic to 333111 for real time updates on parking lots and entrance lines.

The photo from Sunday, July 9 of Yosemite Valley shows Yosemite Falls on the left and North Dome on the right was taken from the Four Mile Trail. You can see the smoke from the Pika Fire just left of North Dome.

It’s no secret that Yosemite’s 800 miles of trails have seen a hard winter. With crews prepping to get to work as the snow melts, it’s going to take a heroic effort to move supplies for the task at hand... and our heroes have arrived! Back from winter pasture, our mules and their packers will be working hard all summer, doing essential work to preserve our trails and the wilderness experience that these provide. Our Junior Rangers worked hard to help mark the occasion, surprising the herd with this original artwork. Thanks, mules! A special thanks to Yosemite Conservancy for generously supporting these hard-working animals; we’re grateful every mile of the way!
