Mary Skinner (1847-1922) was born in Johnston Township, Trumbull County and came to Canfield around 1852. For most of her life, she resided with the highly-regarded Boughton family, headed by Charles Ensign, a farmer, deacon, and son of Eli Taylor Boughton, one of Canfield's earliest merchants. According to census records, Mary worked in the Boughton home for a while before acquiring a teaching position, which she held for many years.

In the late years of her life, Mary lived with George Boughton, Charles's son, and briefly served as his housekeeper. She never married. Mary passed away from sepsis at Massillon State Hospital.

Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, was established after the Civil War and formalized on May 30, 1868 by Commander-in-chief John A. Logan of the G.A.R. The holiday was reserved to honor Union soldiers who had perished during the Civil War, but after World War I, it was expanded to honor those who had died in all conflicts.

Celebrated on the last Monday of May, the name "Memorial Day" was adopted in 1971.
