Published to coincide with the exhibition is a hardcover poetic catalogue by Thames & Hudson and Zeitz MOCAA, edited by Koyo Kouoh. 'When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting', is richly illustrated with all works selected for the exhibition, and includes a contextual essay by exhibition co-curator Tandazani Dhlakama and four specially commissioned texts by acclaimed female writers Ken Bugul (Senegal), Maaza Mengiste (Ethiopia), Robin Coste Lewis (United States) and Bill Kouelany (Republic of Congo).

Omba Arts Trust supports rural artisans in Namibia through the development and marketing of their craft, which in turn also highlights the beauty and culture of the country itself – its history, people and landscapes.

The new Omba cushions are inspired by the floral heritage of this remarkable landscape – a land defined by wide open spaces – and these bold and abstract designs encapsulate its intense colour and iconic scenery.

Spilling the tea

Designed specially and exclusively for Zeitz MOCAA by African Jacquard – a renowned local textile studio creating noteworthy textiles since 2014 – this beautiful piece elevates the simple tea towel into a work of art.

Producing beautiful French linen and African cotton products from their headquarters in Cape Town, African Jacquard is known for its authenticity and quality.

A collaboration between artist Joh Dell and Tarquin Vaughan-Scott, Africanum Coloratus takes you on a journey through South Africa’s myriad magical ecosystems – from the earthy tones of the bushveld to the emerald forests of the Garden Route and the iconic delicate fynbos of the Cape Floral Kingdom.

𝗢𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝘄

Inspired by traditional San skills and Namibia’s centuries-old relationship with craft, Omba Arts Trust (founded 30 years ago) works with local artisans to create contemporary art and design pieces.

These bangles, made with cut PVC pipe are hand-carved and banded using traditional San methods, and while rooted in ancient skill, are entirely contemporary in style.

Renowned ceramic artist and gallerist Clementina Van Der Walt’s work spans tableware to sculptural items and decorative display pieces. Collected worldwide, her design ethos is to celebrate the sacred in the ordinary. However, there’s nothing ordinary about her beautiful designs – each an ode to handcrafted Individuality.
