1. Pre-Colonial Era

Southern Africa was inhabited by:
• Powerful kingdoms, including the Mutapa, Rozvi, and Zulu empires
• Prosperous trade networks, specializing in gold, ivory, cattle, and ironwork
• Sophisticated social and political systems

At this juncture, Europeans had not yet asserted control over the land; instead, they engaged in coastal trade.

Resistance Movements Against Colonialism

Africans did not acquiesce to colonialism without resistance.

Notable examples include:
• The Herero and Nama resistance in Namibia
• The Chimurenga wars in Zimbabwe
• The Angolan and Mozambican independence movements, led by FRELIMO and MPLA, respectively
• The South African anti-apartheid struggle, involving the ANC, PAC, and youth movements

These movements ultimately culminated in independence for these nations from the 1960s to the 1990s.

As of March 2026, a severe US-Israel war on Iran has triggered a major global oil crisis, with prices surging over 50% due to damaged Gulf energy infrastructure and threats to the Strait of Hormuz. The crisis is regarded as worse than the 1970s oil shocks, posing a risk of massive inflation and economic disruption as major energy facilities in the Middle East are targeted, endangering 20% of global oil flows.

President Ibrahim Traoré of Burkina Faso has announced a comprehensive plan aimed at unifying the African continent under a single, cohesive system. His vision involves the creation of the United States of Africa, where all African countries unite as a singular entity. Key components of this plan include the implementation of a unified government system, a common currency referred to as Afro Money, and the introduction of a standardized African passport. This would enable Africans to travel freely without visa requirements. Additionally, President Traoré emphasizes the need for an equitable distribution of Africa's wealth among all nations, ensuring that no country is left behind.

Abomey, located 144 km northwest of Cotonou, is a mythical place due to its historical vicissitudes. It was the heart of the ruthless kingdom of Dahomey, known for human sacrifices, wars, and enslavement. The Musée Historique d’Abomey illustrates this bloody history, and the throne of Ghézo symbolizes royal power. The museum stands on the ruins of the impressive royal palace, which once covered 44 hectares.
