MCGREGOR HERITAGE SOCIETY

MCGREGOR HERITAGE SOCIETY The McGregor Heritage Society was founded in 1995 to promote harmonious development and conserve historically significant elements of the village.

The McGregor Heritage Society, established in 1995 and registered with Heritage Western Cape, aims to promote conservation awareness of the natural and built environment as well as the intangible heritage and cultural landscape of the village. The little hamlet of McGregor lies well off the beaten track, in the Boland region of the Western Cape, and was once described as being' the best preserved

example of a 19th century town in the Cape." Unfortunately, the march of time has, to a small degree, taken its toll. Therefore it is the aim of the McGregor Heritage Society to preserve, where possible, what is left of some of the original village buildings. We are also endeavouring to encourage people who build new dwellings to do so in a style which is in harmony with the character of McGregor. For visitors wanting to escape the city rat-race, McGregor has a healthy Klein Karoo climate - hot and dry in summer, and colder and wetter in winter - and it is the ideal place to stay when exploring the Breede River Valley. Unpolluted country air offers the opportunity to relish a sight forgotten by the city dweller - a sky filled with glittering stars. There is a certain mystical charm to the village and this is heightened by the reputed concentration of ley lines, whose existence attracts natural therapists, thinkers and creative people from afar. McGregor is a unique village and unless we, as caring citizens, make a conscious effort to preserve this uniqueness it will suffer the fate of so many other communities and become just another small town in the Western Cape. The aims of the McGregor Heritage Society:

- protect local flora and fauna from damage and exploitation
- inform people of the importance of protecting the environment
- develop awareness of the rich potential of McGregor's resources
- encourage people to care for their homes for the well-being of all who live in McGregor
- preserve all that is good in our town and community
- resist attempts to harm our environment and the people who live here

Walk with us:
The Beauty School program is steeped in ancestral heritage knowledge of the indigenous plants, landscape and multicultural lineages. With roots in women’s herbal traditions of the Khoi and Bushman lineages, this empowerment program offers women training in the art of indigenous plant medicines, beauty, and care. The women learn how to make beauty products, by hand, from accessible natural ingredients found in the valley and surroundings. They are offered training in heritage cultural guiding, sustainable harvesting, beauty making and care services. As well as learning how to administrate and run a beauty business that is respectfully in harmony with its natural environment.

The Beauty School is offering 7 ‘Living Heritage’ walking tours to visitors and the community in 2026. These will be held once a month from April to September, culminating in a Heritage Pilgrimage called ‘A Walk for Beauty’ over the weekend of 23 - 27 September 2026.

WALK WITH US!
Saturday 25 April 2026 5PM.
We gather at the McGregor Wisdom School heritage buildings for story circle. Followed by a guided walk through our beloved krans.

The long-term aspect of these heritage walks is also to upgrade the existing exhibition signage, information boards and places of interest within the McGregor Krans Nature Reserve, as these will stand throughout the year offering great indigenous knowledge of the fauna and flora our ancestors used as part of their heritage.
