Visit the David Krut Gallery to see firsthand how the artist becomes a conductor of time, weaving the shine of memory with the darkness of reality, transforming the unfinished symphony of human experience into something that feels eternal.

Blessing Ngobeni's 'Life's Note 1' speaks to the idea that life is seldom written in harmony, but rather in overlapping layers of joy, struggle, loss, and rebirth. The work is a visual score, chaotic but honest, where colours behave like instruments, each one trying to find its voice in the orchestra of existence.

Ngobeni's 'Untitled Excursion Series' is currently on view at:

Featured here are two recent works by South African multi-disciplinary artist, Thando Salman currently available from our gallery.

Salman uses painting, mixed media and constructed landscapes to explore themes of vulnerability, memory, boyhood and identity in the context of urban and cultural displacement. His work particularly focuses on the lived realities of black youth in South Africa, particularly young men, through themes of identity and contemporary existence.

The artist’s figures are often positioned in isolated natural landscapes, juxtaposed with poisonous flowers, creating modern mythologies that explore the complexities of growing up in modern society.

Mind Over Matter, 2022, is only one of the playful works on paper by Serbian-born South African artist Maja Maljević available from our gallery. Our collaboration with Maljević goes back nearly twenty years, beginning in 2007 when she started experimenting with printmaking to expand her painting practice.

Since then, she has created several bodies of work with the David Krut Workshop, which have been exhibited in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and New York.

Over the years, Maljević’s work has earned a well-deserved reputation among critics and art collectors throughout South Africa and abroad.

When asked about her practice, Maljević says: "I enjoy a visual ensemble that includes the figurative and the abstract, the organic and geometric, the obvious and the elusive. Put them all together and you get an eclectic remix where any one thing can be something else. A portrait can rise out of a still life, a still life can descend into a landscape, a finger is a toe, and two legs, slightly parted, might be a whisper."

Visit us at 151 Jan Smuts or contact us at [email protected]. za for more information on Maljević’s Mind Over Matter limited print edition, featured in this post.
