Midnight’s Children | Iris B. Chocolate | Open Tuesday - Saturday from 12:00-19:00
Inspired by the title of Salman Rushdie’s book, the artist first reminds us that midnight marks the threshold where one day ends and a new one begins—a possibility that emerges at dawn and must manifest itself luminously. Darkness will repeatedly
surge and dissipate with the force and breath of transcendental things. In this interplay of twilight—between the night that was and the day that begins—we can better discern objects, bodies, and ideas.
Secondly, by reinterpreting the Dikenga Dia Kongo (Kongo Cosmogram), which “expresses the origin and destiny of humanity,” Iris Buchholz Chocolate dares
to propose the creation of a new constellation called “Independence.” With this beautiful, foundational act, she paves the way for understandings and practices that express the essential elements of
the “Civilization of the Universal,” as envisioned by Léopold Sédar Senghor—a singular recreation of a legacy that belongs to all of humanity.
Seen as a whole, it is simultaneously a conceptual work, a sculptural space, and a
cosmogram. Visitors are invited to participate in an exercise that, though rooted in imagination, they may experience as if taking part in a happening.
